I must say...it's a sad state of affairs when petrolheads are offered a red-blooded muscle car / estate with a manual 'box and a legendary engine yet choose to bh about dashboard plastics like a bunch of sissies. No wonder Brits are regarded as soft, limp wristed weaklings by Aussies!
But they really aren't that good. 2 HSV's downstairs in the parking area, driven heaps and they aren't all that impressive really.
I can understand the appeal on paper but that's it.
As an RS6 avant (03) owner, this interests me, or will do in a few years:
More fuel efficient (not difficult)
More reliable
Cheaper maintainence
Will sound better (not that the RS6 sounds bad)
Won't understeer
Will ride better
Manual
More room for the dog
Will help me in the pub willy waving contest
Can't wait for the supercharged version.

When you say "really aren't that good", is that down to the cabin plastics though, or other reasons (if other reasons then why would anyone moan about the plastics)?2 HSV's downstairs in the parking area, driven heaps and they aren't all that impressive really.

If someone's arguing "I wouldn't buy one because an AMG is more fun." Then fair enough - do what makes you happy...but much of the moaning about these rebadged Holdens always seems to centre around perceived build quality. I just find it amusing that many bemoan the loss of manual, big displacement petrol-powered rocketships, yet when we get them (considerably cheaper than from a German brand), choose to moan that the dashboard isn't soft enough.
reminds me of when the Vauxhall lotus carlton was launced and the press asked who would buy a Vuaxhall for £40k (I think that was the list in 1992?)
Well they certainly sold well enough europe wide, I don't think that badge matters too much and this will be easier to drive than the Lotus with no tcs, a crap heavy clutch and insanely priced spares (well on the lotus bits)

love it on every level, the looks, performance, space etc etc.
only issue is a bit pricey imho, but no doubt big discounts, good finance deals and every big-wig at vauxhall will have one meaning - hopefully - plentiful cheaper used motors on forecourts after twelve months.
good on vx for having the balls to run with it, ford wouldnt.

As for materials in the Camaro, the one i drove last year was as well equipped and material wise similar to my bosses Merc. Granted it probably wasn't put together as well but it certainly wasnt shabby.
I must admit that looks like good value. Didn't know they were officially selling the Camaro in the UK. However, I've been in a few of these over here and they don't seem to wear well, but then neither do some Mercedes these days either. However, my point about the HSV Holdens being a somewhat lower volume product is probably still correct. Admittedly, both the Mercs are a touch quicker and will also be far better-built
eh?Holdens don't have the best rep for build quality down this side of the world, but the HSV ones might be screwed together a bit better.
Heard some funny stories from a mate who was an apprentice mechanic at a Holden dealer about the proportion of brand new cars they had to fix before they could sell them. That was 4 or 5 years ago though, they might have sharpened up the QC a bit since then.

Calm down folks its not just a hand me down from Australia (albeit a great one). School kids here are driving these cars or similarly powered V8's. And also their parents are. My neighbours wife has one and so does my scottish doctor. Don't be scared.....someone mentioned "numpties to buy them"......seems he had a massive number of posts too. What was his experience of the drive....or is he just a critic. I am not a fan of big V8's but this is a family car with a twist. I used it to collect my neighbours after their trip to Dubai where we (their son was racing) won the world karting championships for Australia. I have to say it was a surprise how good it felt to drive and loads of room for all the suitcases at the airport. Wake up England...if it wasn't for Skoda you wouldn't have a decent station wagon. Or is that an estate?.......I have been here 9 years now after 20 years in the UK. I prefer the smaller engines that we got used to in the UK but there is no denying that this is probably (remember the beer ad) the best car in the UK never mind the best estate.

I suspect the "numpty to buy one" comment was purely on a financial basis. In the UK it's actually a very expensive car compared to what else you can get for £50k.
No reflection on how good or bad the car is, or how well built, or anything else, but the fact is that a £50k Vauxhall will lose a lot of money very quickly in the UK market, much more so than almost anything else which you could potentially buy for the same money from one of the big 3 Germans for example (Audi, BMW, Merc).
I suspect it would do better if it was badged as an HSV and sold for £40k, but with the Aus$ being quite strong right now this isn't a bargain import like the Monaro was 10 years ago.
