I've just bought a 2005 Toyota Corolla Verso, 1.6 - it's fvcking dull but it was cheap.

It has the following issue.

Air con OFF - Rev engine to limiter and sounds tight as a nut - no problems.
Air con ON - Rev engine to approx 4.2k RPM and it emits a horrific screech.

This was a mates car and he never used the air con, ever, so it's been turned off for 3 years. Oh and the air con doesn't actualy blow cold, no suprise there.

I'm thinking this points toward a knackered compressor clutch/bearing?

The quesion is, how hard/difficult are they to swap out as you seem to be able to pick up a second hand unit from ebay for beween 40-75quid. I've never touched anything air con related before so would be wary of spewing nasty gases all over the place. I realise that once bolted in place it would then need to be regassed by a specialist.

Any advice people?

ps. My mate is happy to pay for getting this fixed, car is otherwise sound.

Regas - yes, thought about it but does the gas have anything to do with the operation of the compressor clutch/pump? I suppose if it's running dry it will just be pulling air around and this could be the screech?? Worth considering.

Can't do without air con, I use it all the time, keeps the windows clear and we might get a summer, want the kids to be comfy.

Dave, noticed your in Leeds. Send me your email and I'll send you a link to a mobile A/C guy that I've used. His prices are good and he saved me a fortune.

I'd guess the compressor is driven by the auxiliary drive belt (it usually is) and the extra load with it turned on is causing that to slip.

Jesus.

yeah the drive belt is nice and tight, the compressor pulley seems to be rotating freely and the screech only occurs after 4 and a bit thousand RPM, only with AC on.

I know for a fact the AC hasn't been run for a few years, my mate is tight and thought ut saved on fuel, doesn't really IME. My next step is going to be to get it looked at by a mobile chap and get their opinion. If they think the compressor is shot then I'll get them to de-gas the system, I'll bolt in a new compressor and get them back to gas back up. It'll be that simple, I'm sure of it!!

Actually I'm not, getting the compressor off looks like a day with the car on ramps and me freezing my arse off laid on the floor.

Anyone in Leeds with a spare pit/ramps? smile

It's just like swapping an alternator tbh. No need for a license to swap it out but you must have it de gassed first, even if its not working

Top tip.

Don't worry though, I'm powerfully built smile

Car has a few other issues too now, I need the PH wisdom I think as I have the option of just giving it back but it's a bit of a st thing to do to a mate.

I've just started a new thread but essentially need a new clutch, new door seal and there is a top end type rattle noise that can be heard in the cabin whilst on the move.

Given that the compressor makes a huge screech makes me think that the compressor might actually be ok; the pressure switch should stop the clutch starting the compressor clutching in if there's no gas. So the clutch is activating. So either the compressor has seized and the belt is slipping or the belt is fooked/slack and is slipping trying to turn the compressor (they take a lot to turn).

Just my theory.
