This one really bugs me, almost to the point that I wouldn't buy from someone who uses it in their advert!

IRA - Independent Rear Access according to Top Gear and some US Patents.

Brought to you by the lame scriptwriters of Top Gear that are in danger of finding themselves being served up as Beef at a canteen or restaurant near you soon.

It's a throwback to the days of exchange & mart, and autotrader being the only available medium for selling cars etc. you were limited on characters so abbreviations were the norm.

I agree with Poing, something like WYG (what you got) would be better, surely?

I always wondered what "MOD" in a classified ad meant. I don't think they were typos for MOT, because they were never in the right context.

Just seen another and realised: Manual Overdrive!

HHR - Helmholtz Resonator
PDK - Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe

From what I recall at school:
Abbreviation - Shortened form of a whole word or series of words, includes acronyms and initialism - Example: Abbrev. for abbreviated, BeNeLux for Belgium, Netherlands & Luxembourg.
Acronym - A word formed from an abbreviated word or series of words - Example: radar, Gestapo, scuba
Initialism - Straight up initials, can form words or not - Example: AIDS, MPH, PAS

So apart from the spelling of the title, everybody is right smile

My favourite from days of yore:

PDM: passenger door mirror. This seemed to be an extra cost option on pretty much all Porsches back in the 1980s.

To name but a few!
