Any 140k mile car is going to show some signs of issues developing - it is why they are cheaper than one with 60k. Is the intercooler actually leaking? If the car revs right through its rev range without going into limp mode then it is probably OK at the moment. Put it in 3rd at about 30mph and floor it to the red line.

Out of your list my main concern would be the "hickup" you mention. It could be your driving but if it is a genuine stutter then these can be hard to find the cause of. If you're genuinly interested in it I'd be inclined to take it for another test drive and check it isn't playing up.

It's not just the tax, but the problems Volvo sorted on the newer models. I guess if I find a good one it will be worth the extra tax. Don't lock me up yet!

3 pedals because the one who will be driving it has made it clear that is what it must be. I personally have a loathing for autos anyway after owning one for 18 months and cursing it every time it changed gear at the wrong time. I've heard there is a slow getaway with the xc90s and the auto that sounds quite dangerous.

You are very sensible going for the manual on a high mileage one - one of the main sources of grief on XC90's is the auto gearbox both on the 5-speed and later 6-speed ones.

Good post^^^^

OP XC90's are widely reputed as very unreliable although we have been very lucky with our one (we have a T6 with the General Motors "timebomb" gearbox, so far it has been faultless).
If you get a good one you will love it, if you get a bad one it will drive you mental.

Take a look on the Volvo owners forum....forewarned is forearmed.

I bought an 06 185 auto last year and have had no issues so far.

Its pre facelift (facelift has a silver trim above rear number plate) and its the higher tax rate but at the time I thought all were the higher rate.

Mine has done 96k and is my wife,s car.

We've only done about 6k in it and it averages about 27 in town but will do 33 on a run.

The auto suits the car IMO. My cousin's wife has a manual and the mpg isn't much better.

He had a bill for £1200 last year with gearbox problems caused by a leaking diff.

I bought a lifetime warranty with it which covers the 4WD system and other major things.

I probably paid a little too much for it but it was a straight well looked after car with full dealer history.

It was local (I live in Lincolnshire) and the suitable one was 50 miles away.

I've just searched for auto models. Hundreds of the things really nearby. Despite the warning above about them causing problems, I might just give one a go. They seem better value and, as mentioned, probably suit the lazy character if the car. I'll turn my prejudice off for this and see how it goes. The potential driver is open to the idea too, which is a bonus.

The "Problem" (ie circa £4k repair bill) Autobox is the GM one that is mated to the T6.....the D5 Autobox is not a bad one.

The wonky steering wheel alone is enough to leave it be.

Thanks peoples. Good sensible advice.

I walked. Found a much better one on a 54 plate. Less miles, great condition and just felt and looked right - you know you just get that feeling? Feels 3 years old where the other felt 15! Strange how cars can be so different.

This one is lower power at 163hp, and automatic but I quite like the auto with this car, and that's a first for me! Engine feels good though, despite not feeling fast. Perfectly acceptable and will happy keep up with traffic.

I travelled from Sutton to near Bedford for this. I prefer 'country' cars to the battered London variety and this is a testament to that. Couple of small issues to sort but I expect and perversely enjoy that in a 'new' second-hand car.

That sounds better, I look forward to some pictures and hearing your thoughts as the miles/time goes by.

All the best with it.

I'll try to get some photos but it's just a silver xc90, so nothing special. Not sure anyone would be interested.

First impression was a good one as I did 79 miles in rush hour traffic, including the hellish m25, and got 42.9mpg on the computer. Probably not a true reading, but not bad methinks for such a big beast with a slush-box. Never been so comfy in a traffic jam either, so an all round good feeling so far.

Usually that's just due to a poor tracking job where they haven't properly centred the steering wheel.
