Must have been a while back. I thought they were all one big happy family.

We operate very seperately, bar sharing a roof.

Don't go there. *That* reminds me of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. And those b'astards mortared me off a cricket pitch back in the day.

The backstory is more interesting than the Autocar forum for sure!

Dunno who REMF was on Autocar but he's bang on the money. So many bleating regulars in there that the place was like a knitting circle. As for Los Angeles, jees, the guy was a nutter!

Think that Holder shut it down with utter contempt for the regulars, giving only one day or less of notice, but this didn't stop one or two of the regulars mouthing off with abandon!

Ultimately, it was a place of very low brow discussion and doomed. Shame really. Used to be a good place years ago

I was SG1979, I was posting there since 2005, through both revamps, I generally confined myself to articles rather than the forum TBH. Didn't post much, preferred to just read.

I agree with your comments, the proof was in the pudding judging by the OTT reaction of some, including someone claiming to be a serving police officer who called Holder something unmentionable in the forums final hours. Even at that point, most of the trolls were too stupid, or to shameless, to just put a sock in it.

Ah right. Don't remember you. Yes, saw the policeman's comments before they were removed. Also saw the chap who claims to have lots of Ferrari experience but who never actually said how (on a car forum!) make a lot of noise. Glad it's gone TBH. Better in here now I've had a look around.

I think it was probably a combination of poor forum management, continued trolling and spamming, and management's estimation that the forum members didn't make up a large percentage of the total number of visitors to the site.

It's a shame because they could have integrated the forum and the news topics so much better, which would have surely strengthened both aspects. Instead they separated them, and the forum ceased to have any real purpose. Plagued by endless trolls and spammers, with no apparent attempt to stop them, the forum died a prolonged and sorry death.

There were a number of excellent contributors over the years, although some were baited into arguments with the trolls. Maybe in the future, Autocar will revive its forum and do a better job next time round.

I gave up on their forum in 2008. I got a ban for mentioning somewhere else and didn't go back. I was SpecB. Can't say I am surprised it has closed.

Hi, "ciao a tutti!" just coming from Autocar forum, it's quite strange seeing there all the threads with a locker...
I see there are some of renewed usernames, I would need some kind of conversion table if this goes on :-)
anyway the first impression is that PH forums are too huge for my tastes, but I'll try it.
Ciao Matsoc guardate questo per gli Italiani.

The Autocar forum did not die because of trolls, spammers or members pointing out flaws and making constructive suggestions. I'd like to be polite, so I will say it died because management simply didn't want to make the commitment. Others will say it was managerial incompetence.

Having just joined PH, I cannot say anything about LA's behavior here. But I was on Autocar for years and based on that he was no troll. He was opinionated, often arrogant and exasperating, and his weakness was that he always took the troll's bait, but he initiated a lot of interesting threads and contributed positively to many others. Trolls don't do that, they make negative comments except when they suck up to someone, and they often operate in pairs.
