Prior to this post no-one had even mentioned trolls.
They most certainly did in the Holder thread where he announces the closure of the forum. I suggest you read it again.

The Autocar forum did not die because of trolls, spammers or members pointing out flaws and making constructive suggestions. I'd like to be polite, so I will say it died because management simply didn't want to make the commitment. Others will say it was managerial incompetence.

Having just joined PH, I cannot say anything about LA's behavior here. But I was on Autocar for years and based on that he was no troll. He was opinionated, often arrogant and exasperating, and his weakness was that he always took the troll's bait, but he initiated a lot of interesting threads and contributed positively to many others. Trolls don't do that, they make negative comments except when they suck up to someone, and they often operate in pairs.
I previously made that point, there were two groups of trolls operating at Autocar. The Trolling stopped when LA was BANNED, the baiting of Autocar management took its place. As I said before, I dare some of those trolls to come here and defend their position because those that carried it on, targeting the way Autocar was run after LA was banned, are responsible for killing Autocar's forum.

You dare them? Seriously?

Why not double-dare them? Throw down a gauntlet and challenge them to a duel? Issue an ultimatum, or even a declaration of war? You'll never be a failed dictator of an impoverished state with that half-assed attitude.

He tasks me! He tasks me, and I shall have him! I'll chase him round the Moons of Nibia, and round the Antares Maelstrom, and round Perdition's flames before I give him up!

Sorry. When I posted here I only wanted to touch base with old Forum contacts now our's is gone and say a friendly hello.

What I expected and recieved from most was a friendly "Hi I used to be..... good to hear from you.....welcome to PH you'll like it here"

Didn't expect the internet warriors to appear with such belligerence. Feel kind sick of myself for bringing it here. Autocar Forum is gone. No point in post mortums or personal attacks on Autocar staff or old forum users. PH is the new way forward and I don't think it will do the image of ex Autocar forum members to bring their baggage to here. All they'll do is ps off the locals.

I've said hello, I've said my piece and now I'm off as a fresh PHer with a mere handfull of posts to my name to chat about motors and motoring.

You are in the wrong place for thatsmile There is an interesting thread about teaspoons, though.

I'll be pleased to see it if it happens. Never did in Autocar and here's the confusing thing : Autocar is still open to comments about cars - it always was. It's just that the knitting circle never wanted to comment about cars and so you never saw them using the site in the way it was intended and just staying in the forum which ended up being in jokes about kettles and such like. That's you, that is.

How many would you need to be considered successful in your line of work?
Perhaps some of the regulars could help out.

REMF and The Genuflectee, my oh my, you really do have something in your bonnet when it comes to the Autocar guys, don't you. First you go to great lengths to make a pain in the arse of yourselves (or is it 'yourself') over there and then, within a couple of days of an Autocar thread starting here, up you pop with the tedious double act.

Have you mispelt your username? biggrin

Oh, and welcome!
F**k me! Yup a b is a d..... or rather a d is a b. How's that for a 1st impression.

Thanks for the welcome.
Looks fixed now! I am an Autocar reader. Tried the forums a few times but as others have mentioned they seemed pretty quiet compared to here. Plus this place has such depth.
I've just been staring at the username for ages trying to work out what the problem was!

I gave up on their forum in 2008. I got a ban for mentioning somewhere else and didn't go back. I was SpecB. Can't say I am surprised it has closed.
You, me both. Except I didn't get banned, I just got bored. And I don't bore easily when it comes to cars so that's really going some!

If you fancy hanging about, leave this stuff behind.

Enjoy PH, but don't bring AC problems here, we haven't got time for that.

Wouldn't that comment be better directed at REMF and The Genuflectee, they being the ones who "brought AC problems here"?

This is quite a sad thread and I don't normally do welcome threads but in this case I will say welcome

but I'd like to offer my advice on how to "survive" on PH

Go to my Info

Click Preferences

Set Page length to 80 then threads that are longer don't seem so long wink

Select show members credentials under their name so you don't get wound up by schoolkids on half term biggrin

Skin to PH classic (for me it's less busy)

Select all the forums that you think you will be interested in to you favorites list and then when you save and go back to the main page select favorite forums only

Hope you enjoy the place and it's characters but above all please remember General Gassing should be for "Car related topics" Sometimes it gets forgotten by even long standing PH'rs (It never ceases to astound me where none GG threads sometimes get moved to)

Oh and Best summary thread on PH from a newbie is always worth a link for those who haven't seen it before
