Love all the 'get a GTI' posts on here. He's 20 ffs! Do you not remember what it was like wanting a nice car, but getting bummed by insurers?

Don't insurers load premiums as much for modified cars (this has bodykit, different suspension, aftermarket wheels, performance exhaust, custom interior e.t.c.) as they do for hot hatches?

Body kit worth 2 grand? So if you took it all off do you seriously think someone would part with £2000 for front and back bumpers and side skirts? No chance pal. Looks nice though.

It appears you have already made up your mind and want the car badly.
You'll ignore the 99 sane people on here who have told you want you didn't want to hear and latch onto the 1 who'll say 'go for it'.
You're not my son by any chance are you?

OP, it sounds like you want it.

From where I sit it looks like a poor decision.

But, from where I sit, I can also look back at a whole back catalogue of excitingly poor decisions I made at your age.

So there you have it. Buy it if you really want it, but just go in eyes wide open that this may not turn out to be your finest hour.
And insure it properly to avoid a world of future pain if you crunch it.

not my "cup" of tea at all, BUT I can see the attraction for insurance purposes (over a GTI) and let's say even if it's £3,000 over priced, I bet half the people in this thread have lost more than that in depreciation on just one car they owned at some point.

if you want it, buy it, then curse about it later when you come to sell it.

Would the insurance be hat different with all the mods declared?

When people choose to modify a car to this extent them they ought to accept that it's for themselves only and it's worth no more, come sale time, than any other car. Yes, it looks smart and I can understand why it'd appeal but its worth no more than any other Polo diesel Cat D car out there.

I don't know how much 'normal' versions so for (with Cat D) but you don't really want to be paying much more than that.

The sensible advice would be to buy something else that's sporty but standard (in the same way as you get the Renault Clio GT models which are similar in style to the RenaultSport models)

Over priced
By about £2k
Horrible looking dubious history

And if you declare all the silly modifications it will cost you more to insure than a proper polo Gti petrol turbo.

A Gtd130 would be a better idea.

I know it looks like you've set you heart on the car but do you know when the car was written off as if it was quite new at the time of write off it would have been a bit more than the odd keymark or snapped wing mirror.

I would ask to see pictures first of the accident damage when he bought the car and if he can't supply them well walk away as there are lots of polos for sale personally I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

But if you really have to buy the car get in contact and offer the guy £4500 and leave it at that, chances are no one is going to buy it for what he wants for it and he will get back in contact in a couple of weeks time.

If you like it then buy it, sod what anyone else thinks! It does look like its been cared for and is owned by an enthusiast, will the others ones people have linked to had new wishbones/cambelt/pirelli tyres? Probably not.

Op, take a step back for a minute and ask all the questions you would advise somebody else to ask when buying a car. You are seeing this through rose tinted specs because you are making your decision with the heart.

Have you had the car inspected by a mechanic, have you driven it, have you Hpi'd it, does it have finance on it, how many owners, have you seen and held the service history, what tyres does it have (apparantly this is the most important PH question to ask)........... ?

Were all the modifications done by a professional who knew what they were doing, why is he selling, do all the numbers match the paperwork, and probably most importantly why is it Cat D, etc, etc, etc ?

The guy has put his own valuation on the car which is speculative at best, and he is waiting for somebody to be suckered in, make sure that person isn't you. One day you will want to sell it on and this could be very difficult for you.

And if you do buy make sure you have declared every mod, not to do so could cause grief if you have any need for a claim.

I was pretending you were my son for a minute. I tried but couldn't stop him buying a Saxo in similar circumstances as his first car and he regretted it afterwards, and so did my wallet.

Wisdom of the crowds says "Don't do it"

But you will.

And regret it.

It's a nightmare to sell on - as your friend is finding out.
Buy something proper instead.

Good luck with the purchase.

That moneysupermarket quote won't have taken into account all the mods on it I can guarantee you.

It does look quite smart and looked after, and I can see why it would appeal to a 20 year old, but as most people are saying, it's still an overpriced 6-7 years old diesel hatch at the end of the day, with a bit of bling on it.

No, no and no (in case the message isn't coming through loud and clear)

It's Cat D, and they still want £5.5K for it for an 05 - run away, as fast as you can.

I also think your £1,700 with easily go north of £2.5K when you start declaring all the mods tbh.......
