Simple as above said, its a CAT D. Not worth that much.

What most people do, if it has bumper damage that isn't worth fixing. They replace the bumpers with something from a more desirable model (for not a massive amount more) and then sell it in the hope of getting more ££.

Reality being, if they bought it from the insurer/cat damaged clearance places, they will have not paid a huge amount for it and now trying to make the margins.

Can understand the appeal of a TDI powered GTI style car, as does Audi with their S Line packs wink

No.

Listen to the advice on here. Get something non modified or subtle modified. Go buy something good.

I'd walk away. As has been said, modification is a very personal thing. Even if you like it, it's unlikely you'll find a buyer who does in a few years, which means paying extra for something now that you'll make more of a loss on later on. The Cat D thing too is a bit of an issue for me.

The running costs need to be taken into account as well. Tyres for example - the ones that are on there at the moment will wear quite fast and they will be expensive to replace like for like. Brake bits too will be pricey if they aren't standard.

Lowered and stiffened suspension might sound like a good idea, but if it's not been done properly it will handle like crap and will destroy itself on potholes and speed bumps. If it was a car for fun it would be OK, but I assume this is a car you want to use for commuting in which case it will get boring very quickly.

many thanks for your responses, I'm sure he's looked after it well which is important to me. Believe it or not, I declared all the mods and it came back with that quote of 1650 with admiral being the cheapest. I live in a nice area of solihull, so I guessed that helped.

But looking at it, nearly 6k is a hell load of money for this type of car. Plus it's cat D. Resale value is important to me, I want to be able to get back atleast 2.5 - 3k after 4 years of ownership which is very unlikely.

I'm not going to go ahead with it, and just keep looking at other cars/models and hope the right one comes up.

Something like this is what I hope to get, even though it is cat C it is worth the cash compared to the polo tdi

I would like to say many thanks to everyone on here for making me sense. I'm sure maybe a couple of months down the line or few years I would regret making the purchase, at that price anyway.

Cat D is normally panel damage and puts most buyers off, Cat C is further damage and even smaller market to resell.

That one also has the airbag light on (wont pass the latest MOT reqs), needs a vic check e.t.c

As I mentioned above, alot of these damaged cars get pimped up to try and appeal to the younger driver who wants the looks without the insurance/engine implications. Tread very carefully.

Hallelujah OP!

Maybe for £3k or less it would be worth a punt (even though it's the most chavvy thing I've seen in a while) but it will be £6k down the loo should anybody pay that for it.

I think some people are being a bit over the top in their reaction to this car and the OP.

I have lost a shed load of money on cars (in some cases more in a year than this costs), I was happy to do that as I enjoyed doing so. I've said it wouldn't be for me... But then if I could afford a Ferrari it would be impractical, ridiculous but I'd still do it knowing that. It's about having some fun with the short amount of life you have.

If he is happy then let him live with it, I'm sure when he is on his death bed he won't be worrying about the 5/6 grand he spent on a car which he thought was cool.

Out of the frying pan into the fire!

As you don't seem too fussed about costs, have you considered something that goes better than it looks rather than looks better than it goes...

Leaves you change for running costs and insurance.

To the OP.

Why not find a car that isn't Cat C or Cat D?

To the OP I have a good knowledge of polo's. The work done is good but not worth the premium. Although they are all oem modifications the insurance will be a nightmare, if you are looking for a cheap reliable diesel try golf mk3 tdi. It may not look cool but they are great on fuel & cheap to buy but watch out for the rust
