A few days ago my turbo started intermittently giving up, and now my exhaust system light has come up on the dash. Any ideas how bad this may be and how much it costs to fix? Conveniently my warranty doesn't cover 'exhaust systems' :-/

You really need to get it scanned with VCDS/Vagcom.... to see whats going on.

If you mean your turbo is intermittently failing then i would suggest the turbos bearings have let go and contaminated the cat ,or could just be your Lambda sensor has failed.

Exhaust light?

I'm guessing this is a diesel, in which case DPF's aren't covered by warranties.

Trade it in, trade it in now.

I can't trade it in, I've only just bought and am still paying for it.

I've booked it in for Thursday for a diagnosis with the dealerships garage. I've had it less than 2 months, what's the situation if I say "No, I'm not paying that, take the car back"? Can I do that?

Surely you habe some kind of warranty on this? If so i wouldn't be booking it in for a diagnostic, i'd be taking it there and asking them to sort it out.

Sounds like a DPF problem assuming its a diesel, agree with the above that you should get a diagnostic check done first and also see what the soot level is in the DPF, the reading you get will determine what action needs to be taken i.e. a simple static regeneration or something more complex.

Also does the glow plug light flash as well and is there any loss in power?

if it's a petrol the emissions light comes on if the lambda probe detects the exhaust gas being too rich or too lean.

Common reasons are coilpack failure, lambda probe fault or coolant temp sensor fault.

If it's a diesel it'll be DPF, if it has one.

It's a diesel, and no other lights apart from the exhaust system one.

It does have a 2 year warranty, but the warranty book clearly lists that it doesn't include exhaust systems. If I'm looking at hundreds of £s to repair then is rather just give the car back and cancel the finance.

Not all diesels have a dpf. I have no idea if the op's has or not.

Edited. Would a diesel without a dpf have an exhaust warning light?

Do you do a lot of driving in traffic? It may just need a good run?

Highly unlikely. I personally have never seen an exhaust light on a car without a DPF.

It's true not all diesels have DPF's, but I'd be surprised if a mk5 Golf doesn't.

Take the oil filler cap off, and then put back on. This sometimes clears the warning light.

(won't fix the turbo though biggrin)

I thought that would probably be the case, I was thinking out loud really. I recently bought a 09 diesel that is without a dpf which was a nice surprise, but if I'd of had the choice between a dpf or an M32 gearbox I'd choose the dpf every time. smile
