RE: Audi S3: Driven
Discussion
Had a test drive in one of these at the weekend, liked it a lot.
-Nice interior, spacious enough.
-Ride was a bit harsh but livable, handled well.
-Engine was pretty brilliant, very strong, sounded ok.
-MPG on the test drive was 33mpg, that was a 10 minute drive from cold with some full bore acceleration runs, the salesman reports an average of 39 whilst he's using it, which I can believe.
-Steering a bit dull, chassis gave enough communication though.
-Looked totally uninspiring, not really different to a tdi. I like this in a car with a 0-60 of about 5 seconds.
So yes, I loved it as a day to day prospect - was offered it at £315 per month with a 6k deposit and only a 15k gmfv after 4 years (this seems historically low for an s3) - but 5 month wait.
Very tempted right now but I prefer the look of the saloon.
My 2p

Really? I can't believe he will average 39. If he does, he may as well have the 1.4 petrol as it's clear he never goes above 3k rpm. On my test drive I averaged 23 doing a bit through town then some quiet B roads driving as I would in my current S3. That's the only reason I haven't bought one - doing 25k per year at 25mpg average is too much. Ended up getting the dull boring 2 litre TDI instead George29 said:

I couldn't bare the TDI...

Well, my run was a few bouts of hard acceleration followed by pretty steady speed keeping up momentum, I usually get decent MPG from all my cars, so it makes sense and would fit with my usual driving style. Granted when at a steady speed we did have it on 'eco' mode, which restricts boost, but this is how it'd be driven 90% of the time.

I hate driving the TDI but there's an Aston on the drive for weekends. Plus the money I save will pay for my race entry fees each month so it will be worth it. The S3 isn't exactly thrilling to drive either to be honest, it's just a good way of covering ground very quickly and relatively practically. If you're driving it in Eco mode pretty much all the time I would question what the point of having one is though. Its a good point about the savings, it'd be my only car though so practicality and covering ground without too much fuss is a good thing (to me). As for driving it in eco mode, the same argument could be made about me currently running a v8 and driving that sensibly. I guess its different strokes for different folks, personally this ticks the boxes very well at the moment. If my contract gets extended/I get another, I might pull the trigger.
