one of these would tick all your boxes, I think theyre fine as they are but a £500 remap gets you into 300 bhp territory, permanent 4 wheel drive makes it stick to the road like st to a blanket

I had test drive of one of these Mazda6 MPS's at a main dealer and I distinctly remember him saying it was not permanent 4WD...http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...
Did he know what he was talking about or do you?
Anyway, not what I would call exciting regardless...

It looks like it's constantly active at all but very low speeds. It's not a "true" all wheel drive system, it has no centre diff and uses a coupling which is varied according to driving conditions, and it cannot send more than 50% of torque to the rear, being predominantly FWD most of the time.
Most similar to the Haldex system really.
They look absolutely fantastic value for money. Most similar to the Haldex system really.

I'd be a bit wary of Jags, mate bought a cheapish XK8 and the head gasket went pretty quick, cost a grand, he had a mate whose timing chain tensioners went, similarly big bill. I know you say you're not worried about running costs but some of the choices on here can really empty your pockets!! Do you really want to buy a six grand car that lands you a four figure bill at the drop of a hat? As for the Merc CL500, Id run a mile from any early naughties big engined Merc. Way too much electronics in those cars...maybe an early to mid 90s Merc would be better....
Personally I think the Audis are maybe better choices. I think engine wise they are fairly tough. Either that or one of the Jap choices.
The 4.0 is an engine with well documented tensioner problems. The 4.2 had revised tensioners and many other bits, a much better engine!Personally I think the Audis are maybe better choices. I think engine wise they are fairly tough. Either that or one of the Jap choices.
The S Type R is only sold with the 4.2 version.
Merc AMG C32?
This is up at £5k. They are less complex than the big Mercs (no air suspension and some other electronic bits).

Not sure I would buy a £6k E39 M5, but here is one that you might be able to get for 5 and leave £1k for the first bill..

If your considering the VXR vectra, for me the MPS sts all over the Vectra in every respect.
Out of all your options I'd go for the e46 m3, but with the knowledge that one day it will land me with a £1000+ bill. but because you have bought bottom of the market you have saved in that respect.
How much are legacy 3.0 Spec B's now? too much still i'd imagine?

This. It's more grown up, drives better, handles better and you don't look like a chav knobend.Out of all your options I'd go for the e46 m3, but with the knowledge that one day it will land me with a £1000+ bill. but because you have bought bottom of the market you have saved in that respect.

Been talking to a friend of mine who had had 2 e46 m3's. he has said that I shouldn't get one due to the rear sub frame issues.
Is a £6k m3 going to be riddled with issues?
Regarding rear sub frame it depends who you talk to. I use a BMW specialist for my E39 530i and I asked them about this. They said they have only seen this once in all the years they have been servicing them...Is a £6k m3 going to be riddled with issues?
