All my local estate agents seem to dive Smart Cars.

Dare to be different, diesel and very comfy for being stuck in traffic.

That's an absolutely cracking car for the money. It's almost sad to see such high-end cars go for so little after only a few years of being on the road (this ones barely even run in!)

But, it completely fails to meet any of the criteria set by the OP. It dwarfs the 320 which the OP already mentioned was too big.

I second the Alfa - looked at these before I bought my Civic, just got a bit put off by potential depreciation. Failing that, maybe a Cooper S or a Corsa D SRI seeing as you quite like the Vauxhalls?
A cooper s has been considered but I live in brighton and I'm an estate agent so a Mini Cooper might give the impression I bat for the other team? Think I'm going to steer away from a Vauxhall tbh, bit tired of seeing the logo on the wheel!

Some things are worth changing the criteria for wink

I'd live with parking a bit further away and walking a bit if it meant I was getting back to a 7 Series rather than a Corsa... Back to the yellow mini's it is then.

Actually in all seriousness, a Mini might be the best shout.

Renaultsport Clio of some kind, 172 or 182 can be had for <£3k, have a go in one.
Civic Type-R is heavier and slower than the Clio but it's a Honda so it will go 100000 miles without servicing.
S2000s are dropping into the £4k bracket for older ones.
Might be able to get a proper engined Z3 for that money, but at your own risk.
Easy get an RX8 in that budget, but again, at your own risk.

That Alfa looks very tempting. Have def been put off the a3. Why the Alfa so cheap?
Because it's an Alfa - pretty much everyone in the UK's first response is "oooh I bet that goes wrong a lot / costs a lot to run / etc. etc." so they've a limited appeal.

Needs a bit more routine maintenance than most other brands (36k/3yr cambelts) and do suffer if they aren't looked after properly. People who follow the "run it till it dies" approach don't tend to get too much out of them then become the people keeping the whole "goes wrong all the time" thing going. Avoid the Selespeed though, as that actually does go wrong all the time.

Look for a 2.0 one though, cracking engine

I'm happy to suggest a few others, but there are some good suggestions above, so I wonder what specifically are you looking for apart from:-
- petrol
- 5K to spend
- not too quick
- different from a Corsa C
- works well on short journeys in town and on B roads in leisure time?

E.g. Do you need hatch or saloon?

When you say "different" from a Corsa, do you also want a change of type of vehicle, or will a small hatchback do?

I ink I'm looking for not a corsa but similiar set up. Needs to be a hatch as I park in tiny spaces a lot. Between a cooper s and a s3 if I spend a bit more

Mercedes A200 Turbo?

In size its taller than most superminis but similar length and offers greater interior space than a Golf/ A3

Quite rare but very quick with 190bhp and generally loaded to the hill with kit. It was Mercs first attempt at a GTI rival.

Less than £5k will get you an 06-plate with 61k miles and a fresh MOT - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

That white Alfa 147 looked a corker. Really like the facelifted versions.

Having said that, I'd give the Swift Sport a go; not driven one but a lot of people really rate them as being a bit more like an old-school hot (warm) hatch. smile

Try a Clio 172/182, seriously.
3k for the car and 2k for the maintenance (it's not unreliable, it's wear and tear/va-va-voom)
2L N/A in a car a wafer over 1000kg
It's also really easy to park, being used to cars where it's easier to reverse into a space with mirrors I keep forgetting that you can just turn your head and the visibility out the back of the Clio is better than out the front.

Swift is probably worth a go, never driven one myself but they're supposed to be fairly good.
A Class is an interesting one. Drive one and let us know smile

Depends on what you want really, focused or comfy? Outright power or throttle response?

Actually going on your above post it seems you want something a bit bigger, or you think you do at least. The only answer is to drive these suggestions though, something will just click like the Clio did for me. I think you can get an older A3 quattro with the big grunty engine (3.2 turbo or something?) in your budget.
Ofc. if you're looking for something new and shiny you can get a BINI, Qashcow or A3 TDI S-Line on credit smile

Oh wait, MPG. Right. (*sighs*) Try the Swift. Or a Primera GTI(E?)?
I get about 35 from my Clio smile
A 205 GTi will get you massive kudos and if you turn up to a viewing and the client is a petrol head you've practically made the sale.

What do Elises go for these days? Cracking fuel economy.

Remember the running costs too.
The up-market Polo is ok, but avoid the 1.2.
I'd still try out a Mazda2 Sport.

It's all down to individual taste, you will get loads of suggestions on this Forum!

Or a C2 as it looks less s**t. 1.6 VTS or "Code", 125 horsie. Although Wiki says there is VTSRSRS 5.5l 18v Template:43785735 but I think you would struggle to find one of those.
Obv there's all the usual 306 GTI-6/106 GTI/Rallye/205 GTI etc. to consider.

Did anyone suggest MX-5 yet?

Mate of mine had 3 corsa's back to back, a 1.2 SXI same shape as yours, then a 1.4 SXI same shape as yours then a 1.4 elegance (?) new shape...then a BMW 520d, so that would be my recommendation, Best trade up i have ever seen!

looking for something a bit different and would appreciate some advice.?

Apologies for the rubbish phone picture. I work as an estate agent and live in a city so do a lot of town driving but do use the car to venture out regularly onto some B roads. Been looking at 2003-5 audi a3 2.0 fsi recently and seem like a good option, unfortunately I can't get anything too quick as I need reasonable mpg due to using the car for work.

Wonder if anybody had any different suggestions with 5k to spend? Can't be a diesel either as I only do short journeys for work all day !

Yes, having had 3 mundane, slow super mini's, with relatively crap build quality and nothing really going for them for the enthusiast all of which cost not a lot of money new, he traded up to a £30k+ luxury, rear wheel drive "sports" saloon, well known for its excellent handling...Pretty decent trade up to my eyes. He has know traded that for a BMW 125d Msport.

And Vauxhall corsa 1.4..98BHP weighs 1585kg...62BHP/Tonne
BMW 520d 177BHP weighs 2060KG...85BHP/Tonne
BMW 125D 218BHP weighs 1925KG...113BHP/Tonne

Whats your point now that we have both sides of your (i assume) power to weight ratio comment.....?
