I imagine the rake angle of the screen is a factor too. Certain cars with more vertical screens will take more force from the stone rather than deflecting it.
Coach screens always take the full force of the stone impact which is whay they are often worse and surprisingly coaches suffer stones chips all over the screen even the top deck screens as well which proves that there are stones whizzing over your heads as you drive so the next time you think you have been unlucky for getting a stone chip give a thought for the one that sailed straight over your head!

The type of driving you do and your mileage is a more important factor though with someone doing A roads and motorways being more inclined to get chips.
Glass is also thinner for more fuel efficiency now as well which makes it less able to absorb impact. The state of the roads also takes a toll with many stones getting washed onto the roads by wet weather and being dislodged by road surfaces breaking up.

There would probably be a mathematical formula you could write to explain the correlation between these factors if you were that way inclined.

It used to be said that on statistical AVERAGES you would get a stone chip once every 4 years but that assumes an even distribution incidences whereas in real life the London Bus effect is sometimes more likely.
