as the title says really? your car is worth £20k say & they've given you what it's worth (instead of say £14k?).

Yes once, but on the test drive their car was not good at all.

I tend to research what my car is worth and expect to be offered perhaps 15%-20% less, as I realise that car dealers need to make money on my car. I generally get it about right.

Its the balance to change that counts

Say this
£20k car = px of £14K and a £6k discount on the new car is still £20k

Better still
£20k car p/x of £20k but you sell privately for £21k , quids, well £1k in

Figure to change is the only important one.

A car is only worth what any buyer is willing to pay, so I'd class a good PX deal as one I'm happy with.

By that logic all of the PX deals I've done have been good or I wouldn't have done them.

I had my car assessed at a local "we'll sell your car" garage and was offered around £6300 after prep work. As a P/X against a £23K car, I was offered £7K which I settled on. Car was later on their forecourt for £8.5K so I was happy with that.

I'm not an over-regular car changer but have had various vehicles from new, to 2 to 3 year olds to sheds. The only times I have traded cars in were the sheds and they were on their last legs.

A Pug 205 was traded for my SportKA and it was pretty much worthless so any money they gave was likely to be instead of more discount, I was ok with this as like someone else has mentioned the cost to change is the key bit.

The other part-ex was a '97 Megane with 2 weeks MOT left on it (1 week by handover time) and was never going to pass. A part of the deal at the time at the Vauxhall dealer they were "giving" £1000 min part exchange, they had loads of other offers on as well with 0% finance and dealer deposit contribution which could all be combined so I ended up happy with the deal on my Astra. The cost-to-change into a new car was good for me on this one too.

I have sold cars privately as well and all pretty hassle free but there has been a few people on here with stories recently about the nightmares they have been having selling privately so I guess you need to factor in the hassle and time cost vs the part-ex valuation.

My brother-in-law is a mechanic/garage owner and if a deal comes along he likes he takes it, the offers he gets away with giving customers on buying their cars for cash or partexchanging with him are very low but he gives them cash in their hand same day.

Yes, Paid £7695 for a brand new Aygo Platimumn in 2008, put 10k miles on it, took it in for its first service walked out having ordered a new 58 Plate Yaris SR for £2.5k off list and having got £8000 part ex for the Aygo.

I think the dealer was a bit desperate to sell some cars as they still had the Aygo on their forecourt a month or so later for £7,999

AFAIR prices in 2008 were silly.
My mother bought a one year old A class for £10,500 in Dec 2007 selling it back to the same dealer for £11,000 the following October smile

Going back quite a few years when I p/x'd my low mileage 106 GTI in for a 306 Cabriolet at my local Pug dealer they gave me full price for the car smile

This however was only due to the fact that at the time I was agreeing a deal for the 306 another lad walked into the showroom indicating he was looking to buy a low mileage 106 GTI. He overheard me & the sales guy talking about p/x'ing mine, and the dealer not wanting to lose out on another sale agreed to take my car at full price there & then, no doubt so they could sell it straight on to the other lad.

Off loaded a complete heap of st (mechanically) type r for the Bmw - got a touch under retail price px plus a good deal on the BM- was pleased with that.

The type r was up on the dealers website for £500 more for months after, price eventually dropped below what he paid me for it.

The dealer didn't drive it at all when I traded it- wonder if this is common?

Got £1k for a then 10 year old Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 SXi which was in "Vauxhall Racing Pink" with nearly 70k on the clock. This was in 2010. Trading against a 2 year old Twingo GT which was just under 8k I think.

I think it helped that when we sat down to talk figures I had my father with me. We hear a door open and a "bloody hell, Jim, what are you doing here?". As usual my Dad managed to have worked in the past with someone who worked there, franchise manager! The sales guy was told to "look after us". They didn't even look at the Corsa.

My Dad seems to do this a lot.

Yup, very recently.

Was expecting to be low-balled at £14k, wanted £16k, first offer was £17k, settled on £17500 and some discount on the motor it was being chopped in against. Not what I was expecting from a BMW dealership.

Recently px'd my 730D against my current 535D.
Could have probably got at least 1 k more selling the 730d myself but could not be bothered with the hassle of advertising etc.

Dealer promptly had my old car up for 2k more than I received, but they are running a business with all the associated overheads so I have no problem with that.
My old car sold within a few weeks, so good business for the dealer!

I am very happy with the car I bought so winners all round.
