Using phone while driving

How are you oblivious to anything happening around you if you are on hands-free? Do you stop passengers talking to you if they're in the car?
If I get a call on my hands-free I press a button on my indicator stalk to answer and hang up, I don't have to hunt around for my phone, pick it up, find the button to press to answer it and then hold it up to my ear for however long the call takes. My hands never leave the steering wheel and my eyes never leave the road.
In the early days of mobile phones I'll admit that I had a few heart-stopping moments because I was messing around with my phone while driving, and that was bloody idiotic.
Whilst you are not oblivious you would certainly be less attentive. I think people need to be honest about this, are you really going to be concentrating on driving and what is happening around you whilst talking on the phone? I can honestly say that in all the time I have been driving, I could not concentrate as well when I have been on the phone, as when I have not used it. Also, I cannot think of any conversation that has been so important that it could not wait until I stopped.
With regards talking to passengers, I would also avoid talking to them when there are lots of hazards, dense traffic etc. . I generally ask the enemy to be quiet at all times but that is another matter!
