Checking a vehicle status with the reg

Easy one for you lot, but what's the site where you type in the reg and it gives you the vehicle and its tax status etc?

Is there any way of typing in the reg and it tells me what make and model it is? I want to find out, for instance if a Renault 5 was actually a turbo instead of a campus shell

Probably the simplest way to do that is get an insurance quote for it.

Though this only tells you what the DVLA think it is, which might not be the same as what it actually is!
