cheap as chips. It's only got to last a couple of months for you to be happy to drive about in that. Must be worth a good percentage of that as scrap.Speaking of executive cruisers,

I thought these were the mutts nuts when I was at school. Looks spartan and shabby now! Oddly appealing though.

I've been reading this thread with great interest over the last few months, as I was thinking of getting a silly/impractical/fun car for the weekends and was amazed at the amount of metal you could get for less than a grand.
This week I ended up with this with a fresh MOT for £1000.
Air con is disconnected, but apart from that everything else is working perfectly (well, for this week at least )
It's covered 164k, but has specialist history up to 154k, including gearbox filter/oil changes and supercharger oil, and the last 10k has been documented as well.
The cherry on the top? It even qualified for classic insurance, so it was less than £150 for the year.

What's the general bargain view of the Mk4 Golf 2.0 GTi.
I know I can completely disregard the GTi badge as nothing about it is GTiesque in anyway. But viewed as a 2.0 petrol daily hatchback snotter, how do they stack up in comparison to its peers such as the Focus? I was looking at Audi's and Passats but a quick re-evaluation of my needs has shown that a mid size hatch would probably tick most of my boxes.
Golfs of around 2000my vintage seem to be on thread budget now, most have turned a few miles and obviously abused/modded ones are to be avoided, but there's quite a few factory standard examples knocking about.
Thoughts gents?

A mate of mine has one, comfy and refined and brisk enough for daily duties. I know I can completely disregard the GTi badge as nothing about it is GTiesque in anyway. Engines are reliable, his is almost on 200k and uses no oil or water. Go for it!

It sure is.Okay, it's only a six pot, but when that supercharger kicks in
That must be a BHP per £ bargain!
I am amazed these old Austin Rovers are still on the road and within thread budget. I spent my formative driving years driving Birmingham's finest as my dad was a serial Austin Rover purchaser. I learnt to drive in my dad's 1.6 Montego and my mum's 1.0 Metro, and even when they were a few years old they were rusty the dog - I would have though any left now would be collector cars and worth more.
When I had a look at Metro's, for nostalgia sake as I owned two and my Grandmother had at least two (my family is very much the same, serial Rover/Austin owners, I'm carrying on the tradition ), I was surprised that the vast majority had asking prices in excess of £1200 with the odd example with asking prices around £2400, the one scdan4 has found is one of the cheapest I've seen in quite a while.

b) bid on by a drunk bloke who realised, when sober, he didn't want it
c) an absolute nail hiding something big and bad so buyer didn't complete when they saw it
d) ?
