ive seen an e46 323 bmw any tips what to look out for when checking it out, cheap price don;t expect a lot, just major faults.
The 323 is a 6 cylinder so check:1) Cooling system - does it get up to temperature / overheat?
2) Check for cracks in the boot floor.
3) Check for shimmy under braking.
4) If an auto - are the gear changes smooth? When 'kicking down' does it change up right away after backing off the accelerator?
5) If an auto - is there any lag in gear changes?
6) Corrosion - check front wings, boot lid.
7) Any warnings lights on the dash? Check ABS light in particular, as ABS module failure is becoming a common issue.
There's probably more...
I'm on the look out for a Vauxhall Omega with a V6 and manual gearbox, so if anyone spots one or knows of one, let me know.
That's all the criteria really. Bigger engines preferred, and definitely within Bargain Basement budget. I am looking at Gumtree, eBay, Autotrader etc but if anyone sees something, that'd be a great help.

Picked myself up a 2002 SAAB 93 Aero with 166k and FSH for £800 to blast around in.
Interior does not look like it has seen 166k and aside from a little drink of oil, it doesn't seem too bad after 300 miles - Touch wood.
Plus, 2.0 turbo means it's got a fair turn of pace, especially mid gear acceleration.

You might want to take the sump off and clean out the oil pick up, as they can get gunked up. Also, they repsond well to a remap. A guy in Nottingham does it for 80 quid, he's well known in the UK Saab forum. Any love for Honda CR-V's?

Ticks some boxes for me. Had a read about them on Honest John and they don't seem to have anything major wrong with them.
I bought a 2004 CR-V a few years ago for £2k, and ran it for two years as a second car without any major problems. Very practical car. The two piece tailgate and sliding rear seat were great for tip runs and Ikea trips. Stick with the petrol models at this age/budget. They are popular with OAPs, and consequently there are still a few nice well-looked after older CR-Vs out there. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Just managed to get 200k out of it before it failed the MOT badly. Such a shame. We still have the picnic table from the boot.

Thanks, do have my eye on a noobtune but at the moment I'm just doing a few odd jobs like refurbing the alloys and sorting the rear arches before they rot, etc.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...
This is one for the 'didn't know it existed' thread but I was idly looking for cheap cars locally.
I'm sure it's pretty st, but £690 for an 09 plate diesel saloon with leather and 10 months MOT seems like value.
I'll be honest though, I still don't want it

Also available with a transverse inline six! The only other cars I can think of with such a configuration are the P2 Platform Volvo S80/XC90 and the EUCD platform Volvo S80/V70/XC60 and LR Freelander. For the former they had to use an especially short autobox that had 4 gears and was st, and the SI6 in the others had some very clever packaging of ancillaries to make it work. This is one for the 'didn't know it existed' thread but I was idly looking for cheap cars locally.

I wonder how GM did it in that thing? If it was cheap enough I'd have one as a snotter just for the novelty value of a six cylinder in something so grotty.

You've just said something that rings a bell - I remember reading a review of some Chevrolet thing in Autocar and the only interesting (at all) thing they found was that it had the most compact production straight six at the time. That must have been this.I wonder how GM did it in that thing? If it was cheap enough I'd have one as a snotter just for the novelty value of a six cylinder in something so grotty.

However the rocker cover is plastic and seems to be prone to cracking on older cars - there's no way to repair really bad ones, and a new cover is ~ £300.

One important thing i did miss - oil leaks from the rocker cover.

Just picked up this 318i SE for £650, the only problem being the drivers window does not work but I am getting it fixed free of charge as he genuinely forgot to do it. It is only the regulator that needs replacing, other than that everything works lovely! It is on 130,000 and has MOT until next March. In its MOT history it has only ever had one advisory for a broken rear light!
Only complaint is the lack of cup holders in the front Still a nice change from driving a transit around everywhere..
