£600? They've had a knock on the head. It's one rain storm away from being a pile of orange dust.

Depends on the problem. I've had cars with dodgy autoboxes that have lasted for 18+ months. If you can accelerate and it's fine but it's when you brake or lift off for a corner that it can jolt (gearbox flare), it's a bargain and will probably last another year before you scrap it. You can learn to adapt ie it just takes longer to find a gear back when you lift off, and if you're patient, it won't ever jolt again in your ownership.

If it's hunting for gears, then run away.

Probably the best way for longevity although how much to install a used gearbox? Especially for a £900 car.

Modern cars are rarely that simple, a mate is an Auto specialist and it can be a nightmare to fix a "gearbox issue" sometimes its as simple as mismatched tyres or an ABS sensor, sometimes it's one of the multiple ECUs or a wiring issue in the loom - obviously sometimes it is the actual gearbox or the torque convertor....

It doesn't look too bad in the photos which usually means it's usually an absolute stinker in the flesh
