It's gone... what was it?
Nice looking Toyota Celica. I quite fancy one as a possible cheap fun car.

That £500 Puma has really made me want to chop in my sheddy Saab 9-3.
Last 2 years I've had Clio 172 cup , 9-5 aero , BMW 325ci and now the puma.

Pumas are great.

I briefly had a '99 1.7 in red.

MOT time came and there was too much to do.

I do wish though that i'd kept it and tinkered.

Great to drive, superb engine, steering, gearchange, ride/handling combination. Economical too! Poor brakes, as mentioned.

GREAT cars to drive.

How much to do the cambelt on a Puma? Is it even worth doing on a £500 car?

Everyone told me I needed a belt and tensioners on my Alfa 155 1.8TS, but that would have cost me more than the £401 I paid for it.

I ignored everyone and after 18months I sold it to my FIL, who ran it for 18months, and then swapped my BIL it for a W202 Merc. BIL ran it for a while then sold it to friend who ran it for over 6 months before.......

he wrote it off. Still wearing the same cambelt it came to me with.

Just to keep this thread moving along, i'd been looking at sub £500 tat to see what interesting things i could find. In fact, my daughter was helping me look yesterday on all the usual websites, and tbh it was slim pickings bar a 5 series that caught my eye.

Anyway, last night i was working so didn't get up till midday. This it seems, is long enough for my daughter to help me out and go buy a nice car she came across for £190.

It is most definitely not a PH car

My Mrs etc think it was a bargain and a nice little car, so looks like i'll be coerced into using it.

May take some time to pluck up the courage to admit what it is though

If your looking sub £500 and your criteria is a PH car then your doing it wrong.

Location , condition , long mot are all that matters at this end of the budget.

Now you sound like them, it meets all the above criteria hehe

Just to clarify, that £500 was a 'target' i set to find something interesting, preferably something that needed work that i could play about with.

I'll give you a clue, it has the name 'Wagon' in it's name and it's not a Mercedes

How did you guess!

10 months MOT, half a tank of fuel, serviced a few months ago (bill was more than car cost) whilst still being clean and tidy. It understeers in a way not even God himself has experienced.

AND..it's a 'Special'. That means it gets a boot spoiler, alloys, front fogs, electic windows and a 'Special' emblem written on the seats.

I certainly felt special driving it into town earlier

An acquaintance had one of these - but the Vauxhall version (Agila) - she thought it was brilliant, even on the motorways!!!

Can't argue with that for under £200 and will no doubt be cheap as chips to run. My neighbour's daughter has just bought something similar as her 1st car which considering it will get used & abused is a much better proposition than coughing up every month just to drive a car with a newer reg.

Is that Wagon R+ Special in the £30 a year tax band?

I don't mind sheds, but it's galling and mounts up when the VED is £200 per year plus. I wouldn't class that little Suzuki as a Shed. It would meet the majority of my needs as a means of transpsort.

A whole car for less than a year's annual road tax? Bargain!

I saw one with the 'Special' badge recently and thought it was appropriate!

Still, £190 for a car that's pretty likely to be reliable and cheap to run? I'd drive it and get over how special it made me look

The garage in our village has a few of these as loan cars.

Real hoot for a day or so, ended up doing a 120 mile round trip last time I had one.

Hasn't dampened my enthusiasm 1 bit!!

The little Suzukis are bulletproof, my partner's family swear by them (had a Splash, Swift and two old shape Balenos) and they've all been reliable and sturdy. I reckon you could use it for a year and easily get your money back.
