Hi, I am about to swap my boring my mondeo for something a bit more fun for work.
I do about 25k miles a year all over the uk.

I have short listed the following with a budget of around £17k for anything with lest than 40k on the clock and no more than 4 years old.

BMW 330 d
BMW 335 d

Merc C350 Cdi

Audi A4 3.0 Tdi
Audi A6 3.0 Tdi

I am going to test drive a 330 d tomorrow.
Anyone got any recomendations ?

Many thanks

Andy

It's also too short to be spending more money than necessary on fuel duty.

rolleyes Very helpful.
The BMW is a more dynamic drive than the other two, but it really is a matter of personal preference. The 335d is not particularly economical when used enthusiastically, which might defeat the object somewhat.

It's also too short to be a boring old fart worrying about how much money you save driving a diesel.rolleyes

OP, the 330d is the best choice on your list.

It's a very important consideration if you do big-ish miles. I do 22,000 a year, if I had the petrol equivalent of my car my fuel costs would increase by roughly 25% . That doesn't take in to account RFL and servicing which is more frequent in the petrol.

Wife has a 330d manual, amazing car if you can get over the way it rides.
Drove a 2.0 Audi Diesel auto recently as a rental and it was the white goods of motoring, totally uninvolved.
Can't comment about the Merc.

Personally I would choose the 330d out of that list, but make sure it is the 245bhp LCI model. Very quick (look up the stats and compare to the others in the list) 245bhp is probably a little conservative. 50mpg on a run, you'll easy find one for 17k and I think I saw a nice one in UK classifieds section of E90post.com

Always a few to choose from on Autotrader, most autos but six speed manual was the default spec if you preferred a spanish box...

LCI E90s easily spotted by squarer and more 'red' colour in the rear light cluster.

I'll be interested to read your opinion after you have driven it. I've not experienced that particular engine myself but read very good things.

LCI 335i here, FWIW it will do 36-38 on a motorway run but mid-twenties around town (with a light foot).

That's shocking. 330d manual, same engine albiet with one less turbo: constantly returning 50 mpg motorway, 38 mpg with a mixture of driving. In fact I cant get it to read anything in the twenties.

335i is a petrol twin turbo no?

Not surprised your 330d is better on fuel.

getmecoat My mistake, thought we were discussing the 335d (mapped=fastest car in the world) Good figures for a 335i!
