RE: Honda Insight: You Know You Want To
Discussion
Felt compelled to ad my ten penneth here....
No, it may not be a classic definition of a petrolheads car, fast etc etc but I truly believe it is, if you're into the design/fit for purpose of a car - it's a stunning vehicle, well ahead of it's time, hybrids seem to have gone backwards! And the battery weight, wow I didn't know it was only 22kg and sounds like they're relatively cheap! Plus I love that few would know what it is.
Yes, it's car 'geekery' at its best, but it's from the days when Honda did things differently, look at the DC2 ITR, another fit for purpose Honda....
To those that own these cars & modify them I tip my cap to you, cracking!
Though g*d knows where all this olde english talk has come from, I'm not even that old, 'onest guv!

I totally agree. I really appreciate the engineering that goes into cars like this. They might not be the quickest, but the attention to detail is second to none. Honda were way ahead of their time with the Insight.
Indeed; also the old cliche that anyone can build a supercar (all you need is Sniff Petrol's pro-forma and a chicken shed) but building a car like the Insect (or A2 TBF - Audi used to be innovative too) is very hard work indeed.I think you can sum up a Pistonhead type car with the following words:
No White Goods
(perhaps we should have a T shirt made up!)
i.e. if the car has just been made to simply move people around, and the main motivation behind for the OEM was financial, then it ain't a PH type car.
That way, we don't just need to include fast or sporting cars, and an Insight is very much a PH car.
Perhaps another fitting description would be to assess the motives and passion of the engineers behind any given car rather than look at the actual car per say?

Spot on, chap. Not a petrolhead's motor at all.
Do you want to explain to us non-petrolheads what one is, then? The majority of owners I have met are either engineers or mechanically minded enthusiasts with interesting garages and immense knowledge of all things dynamic. The quoted post is misinformed. The point of the car isn't mpg, it's a happy byproduct of its efficient design.

What the fk is all this st tree hugging car about. Get it to st off from PH!!!
Instant zero out of 10
Says the man with the PH name that apparently reflects possibly one of the worst, corporate-cost-down-we-don't-care-about-our-customers-at-all vehicles ever built......... ;-)Instant zero out of 10

If the point of the car WASN'T mpg - what was it ?
the point of it was to show what was possible, a "look what we can do". Much like the Honda NR750 ect. Similarly the Veyron wasn't all about doing 250mph, It was to show what engineers unfettered by the accountants could do.
which is why a gen 1 Insight is more than the sum of its parts.......

Don't forget the lean burn engine running 25:1 AFR with NOx absorption
catalyst, you have to buy the plugs to match the head threads so that
the spark plugs are indexed and face the optimal orientation for
combustion.. 0W20 Oil with roller rockers and moly coated shallow
piston skirts. Integrated exhaust manifold and magnesium stressed sump
with ancillaries... The engine is only 56kg. Also Honda first
Multimatic CVT. Hollow piston dampers on the front struts. Not really
just a MPG exercise.
Just a shame drive by wire and direct injection wasn't so mainstream
aswell. DBW and iVTEC seems to work very well on the 1.8 CIVIC R18
engine to further reduce pumping losses.

I have a spare engine (& gearbox) in the garage, the weight of the engine is comparable with a motorcycle engine, it really does defy beliefMultimatic CVT. Hollow piston dampers on the front struts. Not really

To drive how does it compare to the Civic IMA Hybrid saloon?
Which model? HCH1 or HCH2?They are both fairly big cars and a bit underpowered but again capable of high mpg in the right hands The full leather HCH1 is quite a luxurious beast compared to the G1 and dirt cheap nowadays.
The Insight G1 is much nippier though and capable of 100mpg+ when driven well.
