Why are they export only?

Surely if I pay VAT and get it SVA'd it can stay here?

Yup, Wolf, I recall standing for Wheel Over Left Flank, related to where the spare was kept.
It doesn't stand for anything, it was the project name given to it by Land Rover when the MOD said it was looking for a new vehicle. Left hand drive models had the spare mounted on the right.

Seconded that really annoys me especially when you show them a lhd model with the right mounted wheel and they still don't get it!

Maybe I'm over sensitive as a REME VM who is also a land rover geek

They probably dont have the correct markings/components to meet the certification.

No certificate of conformity to register it if needed.
Emissions and other safety equipment might be missing.

Might also be part of the conditions of sale too.
Give Paul Southern a call at Whithams and he'll give you the detail.

Would I buy an ex mil?
I've visited the site and left empty handed, for the time being

We're you an A or B mech? I was one of the U mechs. Went through Bordon in 90/91.

I used to have my own 110. I have a friend who is in the army.

I took him for a drive off road in my 110 (I was driving). Although I attacked some nasty bumpy bits with vigor I was "driving like a girl" and "we'd had it airborne over that one".

There is no way I would want to buy a Defender driven by my mate or any of his mates (ie: all of the army).

In the same way I would never buy an ex-ambulance biggrin

I'm looking for a LR90 NA diesel for my son to learn to drive in.
[/quote]

Slightly OT but why? Having driven many Landrovers they drive like no other car on the road, vague steering, crap gearboxes, what would be the benefit of learning to drive in one?

I am still serving as a B mech but I am currently at an A unit so I guess I'm pretty much a U mech! Plus that has come back as all sprogs going through Bordon are now U mechs

Cool - good stuff mate.

I was lucky that my first posting was to 12 Armd (later 1BN) in Osnatraz so got a good mix of working on everything. Then had later postings to various LADs.

Read the small print! Unsubstantiated story from many years ago, man goes to MOD auction, bids and wins motorbike, goes to collect it and finds he's bought 50 and they have to be off site by 5pm!

Not entirely out of my hat.
All the vehs at my units were serviced by the crew, they only went near the REME guys when something broke properly.

Ill grant the fact that the VM's could be good, once you harassed them enough to actually start working ;-)

As for the wheel thing, I always did wonder about the right hand mounted ones
Drivers in the RM (who are usually pinged into the drivers branch) are usually lazy and don't give a flying fk about their wagons. I'm a VM in the RM and our job would be a lot easier if they actually gave a driver ownership of a specific vehicle instead of issuing them from the fleet just before an exercise. As for VMs, you get lads who are either mega keen and do an amazing job, those who are lazy, those that only do it for the extra money and those that havent got a clue. Like most jobs really?

Vehicles do get treated harshly and spend about 80% of their time parked up. They also get whatever spares they need and usually at a greater expense compared to buying from the local dealers. Parts also take ages to arrive as I waited 6 weeks for some rear brake disks to arrive.

Most RM vehicles are waterproofed and can wade upto 1.5m which is unique in the worlds armed forces. The wading kit needs to be fitted beforehand then removed and the vehicle is then thoroughly cleaned with fresh water and coated in px-24.

I do love the job but prefer working on interesting cars and bikes a whole lot more.

Older Defenders are quite hard to drive quickly, (especially a 2.5NA diesel!), so 55mph is the likely terminal velocity; meaning good progress cross-country requires smoothness and anticipation, so Junior knows he won't be able to go fast. He also knows that if he hits the scenery it is going to hurt as a Defender is full of hard surfaces - in a modern car, it all seems so divorced from the outside world.

Defenders do give you good visibility and real world experience suggests that most accidents are survivable, with the lowest levels of death and serious injury of vehicles in the UK. I do not believe that this is due to the inherent safety of the vehicle, (as frankly they are rubbish - there are lots of pictures of rollovers on the Internet), but good visibility, reliable 4 wheel drive/traction, an image not based on aggressive driving or outright speed should reduce a lot of teenage silliness. Relatively low premiums for 17-25 year olds suggest the insurance providers agree, at least in part.

Another issue is that he won't have more than 3 seats to start - I don't want him to have a car full of mates calling him a "pussy' for driving properly.

Those LHD new Land Rovers and I think the odd Jag have caught me out on Autotrader searches.

Such a shame they can't be used in the UK.

On the subject of seond hand kit, is there any way of tracing their history? For example, I don't think I'd want something the Royal Marines have owned. Up to its tits in salt water and sand having driven up beaches from Scotland to Sierra Leone.

Something that lived in Germany or the UK and was perhaps run by one of the corps - logistics for example - may have been treated better.
