I was running my 328i at the time. It was slower by a country mile. My mate says it was markedly slower than his E39 523i.
It sounds like you drove a bad one which is possible in any car. Isn't the fuel filler cap on the drivers door easy to see; maybe if not you shouldnt be driving!! Of course a much lighter 328 is going to be quicker- isnt that obvious. The quoted 0-62 of 9.5 seems conservative but after owning 3 of these i can confirm it's nearer the 8s. The engine is very expensive to service if taken to a main dealer and it needs spark plugs every 45k miles to make it perform tip top otherwise performance will suffer. Once well serviced the 210bhp is obvious. I owned an E46 330i M sport coupe 02 and above 60mph the BMW was only marginally quicker. The 9 is a lovely looking car, an equivalent German car would look much more dated and wouldnt be anywhere near as reliable which i found out with the BM. It was a bit basic for its time and a little cramped but still a great car; mine had done 170k miles and had no reliability issues

I owned one of these cars for a wonderful year not too long ago. It was just a lovely car. comfy, quite low seating position, cool 90s dashboard, lovely ride and usable grunt in the mid range. It was reliable but routine parts were very expensive. In the end a change in jobs meaning I did 25,000 miles a year plus a cracked windscreen I wasn't insured for (£800)saw it go but it was probably my favourite everyday car of all time. Still regret selling it.
