I was idly browsing autotrader earlier, and noticed a couple of shogun pinins for less that 1k. I currently run a £600 shed of a merc c class. It will need new rear tyres soon and I know it will be dreadful in the winter as its a 2.8 v6 (c280) unless its on winters or all season tyres.

these pinins seem quite cheap for small 4x4s (cheaper than the equivalent rav4s foresters or vitaras). Some reviews I have read suggest they are pretty rough on the road, but good off it. I don't really do off road, but I commute 70 - 100 miles a day (round trip) some of it out in the sticks of northumberland.

I dont expect one to be a smooth and comfy as my merc, and I know there wont be as much space - although in fairness I am mainly on my own in the car, and dont need much space apart from when I am towing our boat to regattas

Any user experiences?
