Cleaning Old Tank
Discussion
First you need to look inside
Drain fuel and then remove level sensor and look inside
All good and shiney no rubbish = no need to clean
Bit of rubbish (dirt and rust loose) rinse and drain - refill and move on to mice damaged wiring
Lots of rusty metal - check carefully for leaks and thin areas - fill up with water and check for seam leaks - any leaks/thin areas get a new tank
As above but no leaks or thin areas - find local builder - borrow time with cement mixer and get a bucket of sharp gravel or road chippings
Chuck gravel in tank and blank hole of level sensor
Tie to cement mixer - rotate for a while and then empty gravel rinse - clean outside with wire brush - treat rust and the paint with several good coats of POR15 or similar and refit filling with fresh petrol
Example see below - not sure I'd use rocks or a cement mixer that let smoke out of the wires but it does illustrate the principle of removing the manual labour element of the process

No problem - happy to help - had to find similar ways of recovering parts before when new ones were out of the question - parts avaliability for 1980's BMW much better that 1980's Opels I'll try not to thread jack this topic
