Porsche Carrera - ?

Not now, no, historically it's from the Carrera pan americana. Performance versions carried Carrara due to successes in the race.
It started with the 356, then continued, through-as you quite rightly say- through to the base version carrying the name now, mainly I guess as it's been around for years.
Anorak points- the 964 was the only model to carry 'Carrera 2', the rear wheel drive has always simply been carrera, the 4wd carrera 4. Rarest most likely the carerra 3.

A Carrera 4 where one of the half-shafts has fallen out? http://911carrera3.com/

That's what he was referring to. People do use elisions and abbreviations on the internet sometimes...
Do you also pick nits when people refer to other Porsche 911 models using colloquial names not actually reflecting their badges? e.g 997.1, 997.2?

It's badged Carrera 3.0. It is generally frequently referred to as the Carrera 3.

Under normal circumstances, no, the internet would be a nightmare if people didn't abbreviate. However, it is a little different when someone says something about a super-rare car called the "X" and uses an abbreviation that could perfectly reasonably be the real name of a car I've never heard of rather than a shortened form of a car that's fairly well known. Reading it back now though, I assume it was simply a joke and I probably deserve a woosh parrot almost as much as you do.
