There's something about active spoilers that I just love, and the original (Thema 8.32) is still my favourite
Original? The Alfa 90 had an active front spoiler 2 years before the 8.32 appeared.

Although being on an Alfa it would have been mostly inactive.
biggrin But you're right, I'd forgotten about the 90, although I think I'd prefer a Ferrari V8 up front to a briefcase wink

Even worse than the 5 Series GT.....
I agree it's a pretty ugly car, but that's just being silly. hehe
You may have a point..... I am afraid I daren't look at one to confirm, however! biggrin
Ahhhhh, my eyes, my eyes! 5series GT and A7 sat nose to tail in traffic light queue outside my office, quick, get the first aid kit and an eye wash dammit!!!!
Dear god, if there'd also been a Cayenne you'd have had the Unholy Trinity!

Wrong PH. The Audi A7 is fugly at all speeds. Its just a piss poor atempt from Audi to copy the Mercedes CLS. Maybe it looks better with the spoiler up to hide that fking hideously rear end.

I followed a Cooper S coupe this week, on the lanes of Cheshire. Anything over mid 30's to low 40's and up came the spoiler the size of a fag packet, pinning the car to the road, to be honest, I was scared that my 2 tonne pickup truck doing the same speed without this aerodynamic wonder was going to throw me into the fields.

My my do you KNOW how silly you look ?

Got to say i agree. The spoiler on both my 928 and 964 are gash.
I think your 928 looks great, the spoiler suits it's age.

Spoilers - my Premier League pet hate: where did it all begin? IIRC it was with the Escort XR3 and as previous respondents have indicated they have been stuck on just about everything else since and in some instances manufacturers have managed to single out the UK market for the full spoiler and revenue-generating treatment on specific models as standard equipment at least on the top of the range model, and not fitted to the same car for other markets (used to apply to Toyota Camry as an example).

Seems to me that the fitment of a spoiler on a regular road car, even some high performance vehicles, is an admission of failure to get the aerodynamics of the body shape right in the first place.... I am privileged to own an Alfa Romeo Giulia Super which was wrapped in a carefully-developed aerodynamic body 50 years ago with all airflow requirements integrated into the panelwork, notably the fluting along the waistline and roof, the subtle spoiler above the rear window and the concave rear panel. In the rain airflow over the curvaceous windscreen renders the wipers redundant above 70mph.....

I wanted to post a picture of a 986 Boxster with the spoiler extended and say how it makes me sad, but it's really difficult to find one! I wonder why...

Spoilers for show, diffusers for a pro wink

That isn't just a diffuser! It's an F1 style exhaust blown diffuser! jester

I quite like the look of them, much more so that whacking a spoiler on the back. Contrary to the press release, I don't recall the Clio 200 having a flat bottom to accompany? The Elise does and if I recall it reduces lift slightly but that's about it.
I owned a Clio 200 for 3.5 years, it does indeed have a very flat bottom across the entire length of the car, finishing with the diffuser (which itself goes about 70cm under the flat back of the car).

Oddly enough I was out walking the dogs on Wednesday and saw an A7 parked with the spoiler up and said to my dad that it looked terrible- I did not know they had a retractable spoiler. Totally ruined the look of the car.

Oh dear I presumed it was only mobile-phone-cover salesmen that drove their TTs around town with the spoiler up, but now A7 drivers are doing it too?

That's bad.

A uni friend of mine got upgraded at Stansted to a Peugeot RCZ last week. Sure enough when I saw it parked outside the house I had to tell him he too had left the spoiler up. After I reminded him the car was not travelling fast enough when parked, I told him to go and put it down before he was allowed in to drink beer.

Yeah, a spoiler is not a wing, they do very different things, they seem to be getting lumped together in this thread.
Can't believe that took till page 3!!

Smackbum to Harris for not knowing the difference just for the benefit of a smart-alex title :-)

A wing on a proper sports car is one thing but why would an A7 need a spoiler? Answer, because the aerodynamics is shyte in the first place.... They look stupid and increase drag, which reduces Vmax and also reduces the fuel efficiency when cruising on the motorway. Just design it properly in the first place shoot

Never really saw the appeal of the "boy-racer" fitting on the back of the Noble M12. I guess they were going for optimum downforce at speed and it had to be big! hehe
