I think hes right for the context to trigger alarms - Could be a trade seller masquerading as a private seller, so will have 'dickied' the car up for a quick buck. Worth asking the right questions
Err... caveat emptor and all that, but rather than triggering all those alarms about dodgy sellers, it would surely be far more likely to be the case that cheaper cars are more likely to be found in housing estate areas because, generally speaking, that is how things are. My point was simply to take the car at face value. Anyhow, hey ho.

Exactly - Caveat emptor - "let the buyer beware" - and hes not going in blind which is a good thing.

If you're on a very tight budget and living in a rough housing estate, then any convertible is going to be a luxury item, hence i'd be wanting to understand how long the seller has had it, is his name on the v5, is he meeting you at that address or is he a trader masquerading as a private seller?

How much better is a TF versus the F?
Quite a lot better IME. The whole car feels tighter with better body control but the ride is very firm compared to the F, so less nice on poor surfaces.

Absolutely all of this....so bear in mind i have bought and sold over 30 cars in my illustrious 16 years of driving, so im no fresh fish at this and my hit rate for buying melons is very low...because i consider that i know what im doing, and im more than happy to walk away if something dosen't look right...I'm not Tameracingdriver wink If a car is straight, then im not predujiced against a seller who has fallen on hard times or is just a scumbag...but.....

Went to look at the 2 F's, one was in an awful area, and frankly im not entirely sure when the pictures were taken of the car but it certainly didn't look the same! Slightly different colored panels, and ran very lumpy..."oh its always been like that"..really...anyway, that was a straight walk away, no test drive required...waste of time.

2nd one, again, slightly questionable area...but very nice self build that the seller lived in, so fear slightly reduced. Car was garaged and decent paperwork showed very little mileage, appears to be sat for long periods and was possibly a 4th car in the household....anyway all looked hunky dory bara little bit of arch corrosion and i was thinking it could be a go'er...but then low and behold....greedy seller alert...up for £1100, so as you say, looked for a little over budget in search....but hang on WOAH...seller has had "an offer" of £1350...so wont take a penny less! clown....anyway at that point its a walk away.

So.....have an Mx5 local that i want to go and look at but its at a dealer, and frankly at this money i don't want to be paying any mark up, so unless its bang on i cant see it being a possible more fact finding, its a 1.6 mk2 so probably a little insipid, but the point was it doesn't need to be fast so not ruling it out just yet.

I am however leaning towards pushing the budget up a bit...HMRC don't need paying for my corp tax about 12 months so i can gift myself an interest free loan..the wife didn't moan about it so I will see what a little extra results in. VVC TF is what im leaning towards given the better spec, and Lancaster will cover me on a classic policy so will be very cheap to run.

Bit late for that now the sun is shining. Everyone end his dog will be wanting a cheap soft top now.
I was thinking that. Considering an MX-5 in the near future, but I can't help wondering if I'd be better off buying one in the dead of winter.

If nothing else, prior experience suggests their modest power becomes far more entertaining when the roads have their winter sheen. driving

Yes could comfortably go more expensive, but why bother? plus there is nominal grief from the other half for something so cheap, if i rolled a Boxster onto the drive the ear ache would be unfathomable. If it costs less than the engine did in "her" beetle then no issues...still cant get sign off for another fast bike though...that will take many moons more effort me thinks!
Man up FFS...........

It'll all be forgotten about in a few weeks.

Right found another F, 93k, FSH, MOT to Feb'14 in standard "BRG" very close to where i live at a dealer that tends to be reasonably well priced, says it runs well, good hood, i can see a bit of corrosion on the rear arches, up for £795...could be a winner if they will take a bid.....

Off to see in a bit

Another dog. Brakes shot, hole in rear window, steering very wonky (just the tracking i think), bodywork pretty poor but not unsalvigable, interior in a sorry state so needs a tidy up, overall a very cosmetically neglected car IMO..oh and a full set of ling long ditch finders in place, made for quite an amusing test drive! In a first in my experience, dealer offered me it for £500 against a £795 asking price, no haggling required!

perhaps at £350-400 i might take a punt as the engine was sweet and it did have a fully stamped history and a fair chunk of ticket, i don't really want another project though.....hmm search continues i think.
