At that price, as a company car, with no tax, something the missus would think is trendy.... very very compelling.

Somewhat ironically though, this may change my car strategy to ditch the E class diesel estate for the family, get one of these as a company car for 80% commuting/family use, and then get something silly/comfortable/powerful for long journeys.

£20k gets a lot of Range Rover V8 or CL AMG autotrader tells me. This is missing the point, isn't it? smile

So, is anyone planning on buying one of these? I haven't read a post of intent to buy yet.

Oh, and don't feed the troll, most schools broke up for the SUMMER HOLIDAYS yesterday. Expect more where he came from.
Me! Based on what i have read - i would get one, 100%. Caveat being as a company car with effectively a 40-45% discount.. Plus added bonus of not worrying about depreciation and servicing.

Without a company car scheme i'd only consider a lease - not a buy. Anyone thinking otherwise would be taking a huge risk: there won't be (m)any of these on autotrader in 10 year's time. The technology will advance more in 10 years than internal combustion engines did in 40.

companies like BMW will sell these things at a massive loss to attract early adopters, meaning potential to get a real bargain i think . Until the price and range of this thing was announced there wasn't a compelling reason to take electric cars seriously - but this could be a game changer.

EDIT: "40-45% discount" is man maths, no need to correct. Point is "as a company car it is much cheaper than the alternatives"

Anyone thinking of buying an electric car in the UK needs to think again. We're about to enter a period in the UK where electricity pricing is according to industry forecast likely to rise by eye watering amounts. Thanks to something called the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD) vaste swathes of the UK's coal fired electricity generation has to come off line by 2015.....and then a lot of the Nuclear generation capacity has to come offline in the following years as the plants are reaching the end of their useful lives. There are very high likelihoods of brownout's (power cuts to you and me) with OFGEM predicting basically a 10% chance.

Your electric car won't be very cheap to run at all....

http://www.energyglobal.com/news/coal/articles/The...

Ever wondered why the govt are desperate for natural gas fracking? That's your answer. Gas fired power stations.....and nuclear eventually.
Remove 20% of the generation capacity and it impacts the periods of peak demand, not the troughs.

So, loss of capacity impacts peak users. EV charging is not a peak consumption event.
Well that's true and I suppose the electricity companies will introduce tiered pricing to encourage off peak use.

But it's a simple supply and demand game....electricity will be more expensive and according to some forecasts much more.

OFGEM are certainly forecasting it http://www.iii.co.uk/articles/75940/ofgem-forecast...

The fact they won't say by how much probably tells you all you need to know.

Could someone explain to me please the car allowance concept in basic terms? I am a full time employee and also have a limited company on the side. Is there any benefit of me buying this through my company? Thanks

Re off peak charges, did you know that leech companies sometimes pay money to other companies to take their electricity? That's because once you fired up the power station for a certain expected load, if that load does not meet expectations, they end up with surplus electricity, which needs to be used. So this Christmas companies paid other companies up to 120 euros per me/h for the privilege of taking their generation. I guess my point is, having a battery infrastructure throughout the country in the form of EV is a good thing!

It always amazes me how the majority of posters here are more interested in EVs to save money or for a car "the mrs will think is trendy"

To fully appreciate an EV you have to leave your ego at home and enjoy the eery silence. It feels like you're on a roller coaster with a steering wheel.

...and the Zoe uses a heat pump, which is basically the air conditioning unit running backwards. It is this sort of innovation that I love to see!

Also, the Zoe can be programmed to warm itself up from the charging point before you get in to the car - so you get into a nice warm car, and all the car's own heater has to do it maintain the temperature. Again, great use of tech.

The performance of the BMW looks great, but I would still go for the Zoe - much better looks, and the battery leasing deal is IMO the way forwards (think of the batteries as fuel rather than part of the car).

That is by far the best interior I have seen in a BMW for a very long time BTW, really stylish and not drab and cheap looking like most of the current range. I hope the design language finds its way into other models in the range....

Cheers,

Jerry
But you'll be sitting inside the car I hope Jerry!

Goes to show how many plebs are on the site these days.
We live in a society were it's becoming ever more important to show off and massage our own egos, which has always been the general theme on piston heads.
It's ok to lust after and splodge obscene amounts of money on a vehicle so long as it makes a loud noise and looks exotic. God forbid if it's silent and the roof is a practical height, then it's over- priced.
I'm loving the positive comments from people who really know their stuff about EVs

I just pointed a colleague towards an i3 as a company car. He was looking at the Ampera.

Amazing how much i3 is going to move the game on for EV's I think. As a second car with range extender whats not to like?

Looks like that tech share with Toyota paid off.

From a personal point of view, there's no company car tax (until 2015).

From a company point of view, there will be no employer's NI to pay and there's a first year capital write down allowance of 100%.

Spot on. It's the driving experience that has potential to be exciting. Immense torque from zero and silently slapping the car down a back road. It's a whole new set of dynamic experiences.

The problem is that the last ten years the 'movement' has been hijacked by spactards with militant agendas and lies and the products have been built to look like spac wagons. But the last few years has seen a slow but steady change as market forces begin to come into play and in the next few years we will see less of the tiny city spaccer mobiles and more of the exciting performance types.

Agreed. There's no contradiction in enjoying the beautiful sound and power of a proper V8 but also the smooth power delivery and peaceful silence of an EV. Two different experiences, both with their own pleasures and enjoyment.

a proper effort me thinks, seriously thinking about electric cars and solar charging system, what makes it even more appealing are the free home charge units at the moment due to goverments subsidised scheme, £2ks worth of home charger installed free? yes please, you dont even need to be a car owner yet!!

And both are infinitely superior to the noise of a generic diesel.

If each EV sold means one less crappy little suburban diesel then it is a resounding victory.
