What sort of MPG are people getting out of these for daily use? Sorely tempted to jump into one of these after I clocked the 1500KG towing weight!

21-24 I've had so far. In fact the best economy I had was when we went to the Evo Triangle, and the worst was mostly on the motorway at 60-70 with the aircon on, somehow. I put some Redex in it when I last filled it and the gauge doesn't seem to be dropping as fast but I've not emptied it and refilled it yet so I don't know the actual MPG. Will report back when I next fill it up.

I'd recommend one, they're great cars with a complete split personality. Comfy and refined when not 'on it' and fairly quick with amazing handling when you want. This is coming from me though and I'm used to a loud Civic on coilovers so most things seem comfy to me. It's no Bentley but they're perfectly fine if you have a bit of music on on the motorway as the engine and ancillaries are pretty loud at 80mph.

Bit heavy footed there... My commute is on a reasonably clear B road, and I get a pretty steady 31-32mpg. Drops down to mid/high twenties when you get a wiggle on though.

The wife and I are clocking around 27-29mpg on the Isle of Wight, that's a lot of town driving, twisty lanes and hills and very little constant speed cruising.
That's going to drop a bit since I got the AC fixed this week though...

Overall, the economy is very good for the performance. Compared to something like say a Focus ST where it is putting down maybe 200bhp at about 4500rpm, and the fuel consumption reflects this, the ATR performs like a regular 1.8 when driving about normally and is only really going to drink when you start spanking it. Trouble is, it rewards this so well it's hard to resist... biggrin

Interesting about the towing weight, I'm not too hot on those. Does that mean you can tow a car/trailer of up to 1500kg?

While I'd agree the ATR is faster than the factory figures suggest I'd be amazed if it will do 0-60 in well under 6 seconds.
How was the video done? Do you suspect tuned car?
It could have been done on a rolling road for all we know.

It's also not a hugely accurate way to measure a cars performance, otherwise that's how everyone would do it rather than buying expensive timing gear.

Yep I agree, I get 30-32 out of mine every tank and that involves a few VTEC squirts most journeys.

I've had mine for 3 years now, had a bit of a shock last summer when the head gasket went, but a bit of time on Accord-R revealed it to be a more common issue now for higher mileage cars (129k on mine now).

I've still got it and without making a big jump, can't think of anything else that will better it for the money.

This is probably the one PH topic with the most "best car I ever owned" quotes.

Integra ticks all the boxes but the ATR has that Qishness.

Yes, shame he didn't have a proper vbox or even a Dynolicious trace to actually verify it. The speedo doesn't seem to react till the car's moving at 10+ so its hard to time it from that clip

Nice car. Always see pics of other facelift NHBs and wonder, "Why doesn't mine look that good?" wink

What's the tuning potential for the ATR ? (both N/A and turbo kits ?)
Is there a weakness on any of the mechanical bits when tuning ?

Search here for the project thread by the guy going for 1000bhp with his ATR.

Yes, really.

They have 290-300bhp potential NASP, without increasing the displacement. Cams, breathing, ECU, bit of extra compression etc.

Turbos can be done but not to any significant level on the original engine. Over about 5psi requires a closed deck block without the FRM liners from a Prelude, but once you've got that then as much power as you want really.

I've heard that too, I know there were only 11 made on S plate. Never seen anything indicating that mine was used by the press though, but would be awesome if it was and there's an article with it.

I think there's 6 left on S plates.

Right. *cracks knuckles* smile

As a long-term owner (5.5 years & 65000 miles), i can offer an honest view. When i bought the car it was standard, but now the spec list is very different :

http://www.torquestats.com/modified/index.php?car_...

As a bog-standard car, the Accord is not really a 'true' 200bhp car. I will list the reasons below :

For a start, the only time the engine produces 200+bhp is in a very small powerband between about 6900rpm to 7300rpm.

The gearing is long. Way too long. 1st and 2nd are ok, but 3rd, 4th and 5th are an absolute joke on a 1300kg car with this type of engine.
The most embarrassing speed to be caught out at whilst carrying 3 passengers is around 90-95. Once you change up to 4th, you'll be in VTEC but you may find a gutless zone between 95-105 because the Honda engineers decided that willy-waving about top speed was more important than acceleration in the higher gears.

The best way to avoid this design flaw is to fit a 4.64 final drive (or higher) to bring the maximum in-gear speeds back down to a level that suits the nature of the engine and weight of the car.
3rd 96mph>84mph, 4th 125mph>113mph, 156mph>143mph. smile

At the current age of this car, i would strongly urge anyone thinking of buying one to think very carefully before buying. If you're a mechanic and like taking cars to bits, then this car really is perfect for you. smile

Despite the above criticisms, i do still genuinely like/love the car (mostly the engine) very much. So much so, that i dare not sell it and have every intention of putting it into storage or transplanting the engine/gearbox/lsd into a different car at some point in the future....
