For what it's worth, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the gear ratios.

The ratios are not far off the DC2's, the problem is purely that VTEC engages 'kicks in yo' at too high RPM (5700rpm) for the relatively low rev limiter (7900rpm).
Gear ratios are supposed to work with the engine - gear ratios are not useful in isolation from that.

The simple fact is that the Accord Type-R's gearbox made it hard to use the car at maximum attack - run the car right to the redline, change as fast as you can and you still get the engine back just below it's powerband - there's a noticeable delay proceedings, even in road driving (it's really grating on the track tho).

It's a sign they couldn't really be bothered to finish-off the car properly - that it was more "some bits and a badge" than a complete car - but in fairness, it's not really a car about 'maximum attack' and it does everything else really, really well so you might just forgive it.

It has the best seats I've ever sat in - for example...

I agree, but I've never had an issue with it personally. Maybe I'm just super fast at changing gear... biggrin

If it really bothers you, an ECU upgrade and setting the VTEC to 5500rpm would fix it as well as netting a bit more power, better driveability, better fuel consumption etc.

Fantastic cars, drove one for a couple of weeks while my ZT was being repaired. Did not want to give it back.

When the cost of the insurance is the same price of the car £2000+ how is that not deemed expensive.
I wouldnt call evo`s and imprezas its rivals even if we think we are 2001,probably more the seat leon cupra of the time
Some people pay £3k to insure a £1k 1.0 shopping car at 17. Does that make that an expensive car to insure?

No, it just makes it expensive for them.

The ATR is cheap to insure compared to it's competition. I know, because I looked at a lot of ~200bhp saloon cars before buying mine and guess what, it was the cheapest. It was still expensive for me but cheaper than anything else whilst offering the best package.
I see well everyone is different i am running a quote through now ,and its the same price as my t-sport according to money supermarket.Saying that i dont live in manchester anymore so thats probably the price difference from when i looked before.

Tempting if i had a kid on the way tommorow for sure

A true great. I remember driving one of these out of the Honda depot at Watlington - 2001/2002 ish' at 4 A.M. and absolutely belting it - I mean a proper caning as it wasn't my car and I didn't have to pay for the fuel or tyres - all the way to Edinburgh. The last bit on the 702 (I think it is) is etched on my motoring memory. What a truly brilliant morning that was. I will get one at some point. Hard to keep in the powerband they were but much more than just a great engine.

I was thinking about one these when i was looking for a replacement for my Cupra. I was always put off by the ones i saw having high millages and i just couldnt be sure if they'd all been absolutely thrashed (same thoughts with the ITR). Don't get me wrong i still want one and had i not charged headlong into buying my VRS i could well of bought one. Though i wonder how the running costs would stack up with the MK1 Octavia VRS i now have. Insurance and type R doesn't go particularly well here with an 'L' postcode while the Octavia doesn't do too bad and similar levels of performance albiet with worse handling than the Accord IMO.

I had a black one as a company car when they were first launched. It was great and back then twin pipes at the back and a large wing on a saloon car were a bit of a novelty it used to attract a fair amount of attention. It was a really good car, fast and fun. I had got my shortlist down to that and an Impreza. The Subaru didn't really do it for me and the Accord seemed a cut above. Fantastic recaro seats and momo wheel too.

Seems like mine might be dead now. It's not insured and not taxed or SORN either.

Shame they never offered Champ White in Britain...

Also the CL7 Euro R has a 2.0 K20A Engine as seen in the DC5 Integra and EP3 Civic, the CL1 Euro R has the same 2.2 as the CH1 and if you want the same engine that was used in the touring cars you need a JDM SiR with the F20 Blue Top.
Damn, sorry about this. That info from was a Car magazine article on Type Rs from last year; there goes one more reliable source from the list! Article is updated now with the correct engine info.

Cheers,

Matt

Did they have a choice of a low rise rear spoiler? I seem to remember walking past a black one once that had a more discreet lower wing on the bootlid.
On the pre-facelift car the high level spolier was a delete option when ordering new in which case no spoiler of any size was fitted by the factory. I can't comment for the facelift.

I had one and at the time felt the bees knees driving around in it. I was 22 at the time and did not feel at all out of place driving it.

Will never have a bad word to say about her, and have some fantastic memories. The owners club had a fantastic forum with a very wide knowledge base too.

The day I sold her felt like was the worst day ever!

I had one for about 8 months and although it had moments of pure brilliance I didn't really get it.

With just the driver on board, and a quiet twisty road in front of you it was amazing. Hair standing on the back of the neck stuff. The LSD gave brilliant traction of of corners and on VTEC it sounded like nothing else I have ever driven.
You could get round the dropping out of VTEC when changing into 3rd by simply going past the red line, taking care not to hit the limiter of course.

However driving it fast was a bit of a workout, the LSD tugging at your arms and the gearbox requiring constant attention to keep the engine on the boil. 95% of the time this got a bit tiring and it wasn't like it was a pleasant car to drive off VTEC. Excessive road noise and an engine that droned below 5.5k all made worse by a lack of any sound proofing.

Even worse was when you get a few passengers in. You could feel the difference with one in, but get four up and it felt slow. Not to mention the fact that at 70 mph the road noise was enough to drown out any chance of a conversation with said passengers.

If it had been a coupe I'd have got it because it made a perfect weekend car, I can complelety understand why Honda didn't sell many.

In other words I completely get the DC2, but the ATR was just too compromised as an every day car IMHO. Young lads who don't car about road noise etc and druive every day like they stole it want a coupe. When I was in my early 20s 4 door saloons, especially Hondas, were about as cool as Cliff Richard, even if they did have a Type-R badge on the boot. When you get a bit older and need/want more practicality you also want a bit more comfort (I generalise of course!).
There is a good reason why no one made a direct competitor to the ATR at the time.

I've had mine for over 10 years now and can not think of anything that I'd want to replace it with that does everything that mine does now.

Saying that she's not standard anymore but I like her the way she is....

Miss mine massively.

Mine was Satin silver and apparently is still out there.

You could spec either; no spoiler, mid level or high spoiler on these from new afaik.

Had a H & S exhaust on mine which gave it a nice burble.

Best seats I've had in a car too.

Don't think that Autocar test was representative and yes it was damp. EVO managed 0-100 in the 17.4s and 0-120 in 27.4 secs. Similar performance to an early Sierra Cosworth.

One of my best mates owned one and sold to a Pistonheader last year. He also owned a Mk1 Skoda Octavia VRS twice and said that on full attack the Honda was a much quicker car and the best handling car he had ever owned.
