Very good point. But when you look at the Vanquish, DB9 and V12 Vantage S, they are all manual only right now, so methinks the next Vantage wouldn't have a manual option anyway.

Up till now, you've managed to get away with a frankly slightly iffy rear suspension design/implementation, but now, well, lets just say you're gonna have to do a bit better, or those AMG horses are going to expose the chassis dynamics big time...........

Yep Aston V12, two Ford V6's glued together. AMG engines sound all that more appealing all of a sudden.

It's not. I didn't say the above were exempt, I'd just rather see Aston develop its own engines.

The V8 in the Vantage may be based on the Jaguar AJ-V8, but have since pretty much re-developed the whole thing. The V12 is the same thing - based on two Ford V6's many years ago, it was developed solely for Aston, and has been reworked completely since then.

Pagani couldn't have started if they made their own for the C12. Since then they've continually had AMG modify it to their spec, it's become their own.

The Lamborghini V10 was developed for them, just because it's subsequently been used elsewhere doesn't make it less special. It was built for the Gallardo.

The Rolls is a stickler for me - sharing the engine with a puny 7-series is a bit below what is supposed to be the ultimate in luxury cars.

Mini/Range doesn't make any difference to me - they're not sports cars and have never had their own engines, objectively speaking.

I've got no particular issue with this as AMG do make some cracking engines. The article focuses on V8s though. V8s are fine, but everyone and his dog has one and Aston Martin should not, IMHO, underestimate the prestige value of a V12. Luckily AMG make both layouts.

They simply cannot afford it. To develop an engine costs hundreds of millions of pounds, to recover that cost over the tiny number of units Aston Martin are going to sell is not viable.

Not sure the engines are the problem. Does this deal include platforms and other running gear (electrics, gearboxes etc)? That is where Aston seems to be falling behind the curve. Never heard any complaints about any of their engines...
