Nice read. Is this a Gen 1 or 2? Not a big fan of white cars, but actually think it suits yours. I also quite like the decals, but agree that the wheels aren't particularly nice; the chrome finish especially.

This thread caught my eye as it reminded me of my road trip from here in the UK, across Germany and into Denmark. I thought German drivers would wave me past as King of the Autobahn. I think within 5 minutes of my first Autobahn, i was undertaken by a Passat Estate (seems leaving a safe gap between the guy in from isn't part of their driving etiquette).

The fastest i got up to was about 175mph; all the best stretches were busy. I reached my PB on a de-restricted but very patchy bit of road, i throttled back when the car felt like it was taking off! Nevertheless, good fun and i think i averaged a ridiculous 28mpg.

If you're after a wheel recommendation, the BBS CH-R looks OEM being quite similar to the Gen 2 wheel, but fills the arches that bit better.

The turbo boost going, I think, was a pipe or something. Easy fix, IIRC.

The car is late model Gen 1 Turbo.

He has also bought a set of lovely OZ Ultraleggera wheels for his summer tyres - the black alloys in a couple of the photos. He's kept the originals for his winters smile

This example isn't the one that was located at Mille Miglia Motors in Starnberg?
Yes it was smile

I'm sure Pete will be along shortly to confirm/correct me smile

Having had two 996 Turbos with an E92 M3 in between, the comparative comment about the M3 is spot on - they are fast but feel truck like in comparison to the Porsche. I'd love a 997 but they are still 70K plus euro in Ireland, even for an early one.

Ah, thought the black wheels were painted OEM ones, i see now!

Ouch, £70k. Think they may have dipped below £40 in the mainland now? No doubt mine has dropped a scary amount in value.

Your girlfriend vetoed a GT3 RS and you went along with it?!?!

For shame on you. If you are the one paying for it then you should be able to have whatever you want regardless of what you choose. I will add that I'm assuming you are the one paying for it and not both of you together.

If my other half ever tried that trick she'd be shown the door.

How about this one for a late contender...you could ditch the girlfriend, take up shaking the coffee beans like its an Olympic sport and get a GT3RS?

So does everybody - best place to spot some exotica around Frankfurt on a sunny weekend...

PZ Hofheim do seem like a relaxed lot, especially compared to Frankfurt. Stopped by there a few times to have a nose round. They have a lot more old stuff floating around too, which I like.
+1 - enjoyed seven years of excellent service from them while running my Boxster. Will be interesting to see how they fare with the expansion & PZ Frankfurt's spin-off due to open in Oberursel next year encroaching on their Taunus home turf.

Actually, most OEM exhausts are a compromise, having to take into account dB limits and emissions. Check out companies like Akrapovic - their 997 Turbo system gives +15hp and half (half!) the weight of the standard system at 12kg versus 22.5.

I'll just never understand the Pistonheads "factory is always better and any modifications whatsoever are chav" mentality.

yes For naturally aspirated cars, manufacturers put a lot of effort into tuning the back-pressure to the header lengths get scavenging as effective as possible. However, for a turbo you mostly just want the lowest back-pressure possible so after-market systems can really help (if you don't mind them being louder than standard).

100% correct. That's why (as ridiculous as they look), drainpipe exhausts are actually functional, to an extent, on cars like Skyline GT-Rs, Supras, etc. Conversely, anyone who puts a 4.5-inch exhaust on a Civic is doing it wrong, and hence why reputable tuners such as Spoon and Mugen exhausts for Civics/S2000s et al are usually around 2.25-inches in diameter.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is: don't get me wrong, there are certainly poorly modified cars out there. I just don't understand why some posters on here seem to think any and all modifications are the devil's work.

I've had my 997 Turbo about 3 weeks now and love it to bits. In sport mode it's nuts.

Please don't buy a car "to be noticed" as the next thing is while you are looking at yourself driving in the shop window's reflection you will hit a parked vehicle and look even more foolish. Personally, buy the car you really love or lust for, or always wanted for YOURSELF. As a former 911 owner IMHO the Porsche script is very naff as are the clowns ears effect of different colour mirrors.

Kind of like the argument I had once with someone about changing the dampers on a GT3 for a set of Motons.
Apparently Porsche did the best they could with the GT3 and swapping suspension out or tweaking the car in any way is a total waste of time.

At the end of the day, all cars comes off a production line and are always compromised by regulations and more importantly, accountants.
Obviously Porsche could fit titanium exhausts and top of the line suspension but it wouldn't be profitable for them at all...
Nothing that an Akra pipe can't fix though and for that matter there is always room for improvement and you don't even have to be a chav.

Also, excellent turbo there, white with black wheels looks superb.

I absolutely love mine. Extremely comfortable, practical for what it is, and fast. Very, very fast indeed. Generated more interest at a party on Saturday than the brand new DB9 I parked it next to. Did I mention it was fast........?
Really?

I remember the day I picked mine up I drove behind a ~10 year old Ferrari 550 - everyone was turning and pointing at the Ferrari, and didn't even notice me behind them!

I have noticed that young boys love the car, petrolheads love the car, but other than that, most people think it's just a basic Porsche.

I'd be shocked if it got more attention than any Aston!
It was a Porker owners club party.....
wink

man oh man what I'd do to own a car like this. I really feel in years to come the 997 range will be looked upon rather fondly especially as cars become ever more electronic look at the 991 for example.

anyways lovely motor and nice to see it being used as the maker intended! thank you for sharing.

It's also interesting to note that in your ownership you didn't find it more expensive to run compared to an m3. anyways fine motor and theres a reason mr clarkson finally saw the light! (not that i pay much attention to him)

PS My perfect example would be a Gen II PDK. biggrin

As mentioned in previous threads, I've been spat at in mine - turning off a main road, slowly, minding my own business, pedestrians waiting to cross (nobody was crossing), as I complete the turn and look right - there's a huge blob of spit right where my face would have been if the window was open.

I've also had someone turning into a side street, I'm stationary as my light is red, he looks at me, starts swearing at the top of his voice at me - I actually thought he was going to stop to try and start a fight! (Never seen the chap before).

I wonder - is it just Porsches that attract this contempt? Or do Ferrari, Lambo, R8 etc get the same kind of response?

I never got anything like this in my 968 thinking back - but then I only had it for 6 months before writing it off!
