RE: Ferrari 512 TR: PH Fleet
Discussion
A great choice Chris, I just love these, one of the most awesome looking cars made IMO. I've no idea what they're like to drive but would buy one for the looks and engine alone. It's from my favourite era, when supercars were fast but still had that raw edge. One day I'll own an eighties/early nineties supercar (if the prices don't go too silly in the mean time). I shall look foward to the video of yours.

Top move. I thought the TR was a fairly large car, but next to a 599 they look tiny. Wishing you many happy miles!
See how scale has altered since the 80s - http://www.exoticspotter.com/ferrari-f430-canadaig...I know that titchy thing in the middle is a Mondial not a 512 but it gives you an idea.

The first trackday I ever did was a Porsche 'come and drive our cars' day - it was rescheduled from Brands to Silverstone because a certain Mr Mansell had just rejoined F1 and had nabbed Brands and the 993 was 'new' at the time, so that will tell you how long as this was - had other cars sharing the track and I'm a king blagger of rides so I blagged one in the Testarossa which was the talk of the paddock.
One of the instructors was driving - the owner has asked for 'his opinion on it' - which was, IIRC, that it was the worst car he'd ever driven on a track. He said it's power delivery was 'all or nothing' and it's ability to go around corners was 'based entirely on prayer". In fairness, the owner said it had 'had some work done' so that may be the issue - who knows, it was pretty exciting in a "whoa - that's a gravel trap in the side/windscreen/side/windscreen there' sort of way...
In his column in Evo Magazine, McLaren F1 designer and columnist Gordon Murray described the Testarossa as "dreadful", having a centre of gravity "the same as a double decker bus".One of the instructors was driving - the owner has asked for 'his opinion on it' - which was, IIRC, that it was the worst car he'd ever driven on a track. This is by far the coolest car anyone can buy and even cooler because its had some use and will no doubt get some more use!

512 TR
Testarossa
Back in '98 I was asked to drive a 512TR from London to Monaco. Just happened to be Grand Prix weekend. My bravery gave out at an indicated 165 mph, and it was still pulling like a train!! Stuck to autoroutes as far as Grenoble then took the scenic route. The noise bouncing off the rock faces was epic. Only got stopped by les flics once, and that was because they wanted to have a look! Currently looking after a 512M with Fuchs exhaust - makes the F40 and F50 sound positively ordinary.

Surely changing the heads/block/pistons/management, lowering the drivetrain to bring the CoG down, lowering the suspension with revised springs and dampers, strengthening the chassis, improving the brakes and fitting a quicker steering rack will make no difference?
I wondered what happened to this car, it seemed a bargain compared with others on the market(I think it was up for £56k)and I was trying to convince my old man to go halves on it as I thought it would be perfect for our planned trip to Maranello via the the Grand Saint Bernard and Stelvio passes (among others) which he wants to do in an E-Type. Hope you enjoy it Chris.
By the way, can someone explain the difference between a Flat-12 and a 180 degree V12 please? I read another story recently about the 512BB not being a boxer engine either and I'm confused!

I saw this on Twitter y'day and offered Chris an original 512TR sales pamphlet to go with his new car (I wasn't expecting any money for it - just be nice for it to be united with a TR). Never even acknowledged me.
Unbelievable.
Have you apologised yet or do you need your own entry in the 'knob' thread? Unbelievable.

flat-12 beasts (waits for the cognoscenti to howl 'it's not a flat-12, it's a 180- degree V12!')
Can someone explain if there is a genuine difference here (Flat vs. 180 deg)? Are they just towing the Enzo line of all proper car have a V12?Personally I don't see what's wrong with calling it a flat 12 as the cylinders are after all flat. It shouldn't be called a boxer engine though (despite Ferrari naming the Testarossa's predecessor the Berlinetta Boxer).
So, yes, should be considered "flat" but not a boxer...

Of course I did it on purpose ... in the style of Private Eye / Viz - to make the point that the cars are virtually identical in terms of;
A looks
B handling
C centre of gravity ....

LOL! It must be true then if it comes from a McLaren designer... That car looks so cool, nice one Chris...
