Hopefully my next purchase. I love the idea of a 12 cylinder which can be opened up for a few seconds without losing my license (I'm in no way suggesting it's slow, just doesn't have 700hp :/ ). It's been a dream car since I was a kid.

Excellent decision and please do upload a video with lots of exhaust sound but no music... smile.

The first trackday I ever did was a Porsche 'come and drive our cars' day - it was rescheduled from Brands to Silverstone because a certain Mr Mansell had just rejoined F1 and had nabbed Brands and the 993 was 'new' at the time, so that will tell you how long as this was - had other cars sharing the track and I'm a king blagger of rides so I blagged one in the Testarossa which was the talk of the paddock.

One of the instructors was driving - the owner has asked for 'his opinion on it' - which was, IIRC, that it was the worst car he'd ever driven on a track. He said it's power delivery was 'all or nothing' and it's ability to go around corners was 'based entirely on prayer". In fairness, the owner said it had 'had some work done' so that may be the issue - who knows, it was pretty exciting in a "whoa - that's a gravel trap in the side/windscreen/side/windscreen there' sort of way...

I then blagged a ride in 993 development racecar with (the now sadly lost to us) David Leslie - sitting in a 'metal dent' whilst he discovered it was

a - the fastest thing in a straight line on earth - eyeball flatteningly so
b - unable to go around corners either - hello gravel in your trousers...

That was a good day - I even appeared in Autocar IIRC

In his column in Evo Magazine, McLaren F1 designer and columnist Gordon Murray described the Testarossa as "dreadful", having a centre of gravity "the same as a double decker bus".

So, is this the first step in a sly plan to be allowed back to Fiorano? ;-)

Top move. I thought the TR was a fairly large car, but next to a 599 they look tiny. Wishing you many happy miles!

The Testarossa was never a track day car whereas the Countach was a lot better on a track than the Ferrari. But on wide a and b roads the Testarossa was so much easier to go quick in. One of my favourite days was hustling by the traffic on the A35 in a Testarossa. I have driven that road loads of times and the Countach was hard work the 550 was so fast it was plain scary on those roads but the Testarossa was sublime it was just heaven. Fast enough to leave ordinary traffic behind whilst not arriving into corners so fast you thought you had it wrong. My memory bank has gone emotional HELP I think I might need a Testarossa.

I think you need to do some homework, both of you before discussing TRs on a 512 thread....

Fantastic. The looks are awesome rather than pretty but it's firmly in my top 3 favorite Ferraris.

You've got to love a car journo who actually buys product, used super car product at that, with his own wedge.

Has their even been such a thing?

Congratulations Chris! The 512TR has always been the car I promised myself when I could afford it. I ended up buying a 355 recently but the 512TR will be next. Still regret turning down a low miles 512M for £36k a few years back. Now I would need 3 times that to buy a good one!

O Harris how great to read you again and with such passione. Enzo is obviously up there smiling on you.
I also followed a yellow version off the A23 to Burgess Hill one night in my S4 and once the owner clocked me, gave it beans of throttle and the noise was sheer heaven. It is however a very wide beastie and narrow back roads would not be it's forte I suspect. The A3 down to the Haslemere exit from the M25 is good if there are no jam sandwiches around, lots of fast curves there. If you really want to spoil yourself take the A30 from Exeter going west to Cornwall as there are only a couple of gatsoes until Truro. On the way back remember the gatso at Pathfinder (the one that did for Ross Brawn) and bring back some real cornish pasties and cider. Enjoy the beast and keep bringing us your hugely enjoyable stories.
If you take that route - just make sure you don't get off before Hindhead tunnel. It has average speed cameras though but is a mile long so some sedate driving can be rewarded with some vocal trashing at some point in the tunnel...

Fabulous, best thing Chris has ever bought, I may be slightly biased though hehe

Looking forward to all the vids/reports that comes out of this. As for the blue smoke, mine does that occasionally also and had it confirmed by the main dealer that this was fine (they apparently contacted Italy to confirm)....you can see a bit of this puff on the video I put up on the carpool thread.

You did. But he mentioned he bought it through his Ferrari dealer friend Matthew Beard. CH also bought a couple of Porsche's from the same guy when he worked at Porsche Bristol... wink

I saw this on Twitter y'day and offered Chris an original 512TR sales pamphlet to go with his new car (I wasn't expecting any money for it - just be nice for it to be united with a TR). Never even acknowledged me.

Unbelievable.
Didn't see the tweet sadly. If you're off-line on an iPhone for long enough you don't get all the tweets you missed. Kind offer, sad you immediately assumed I was a wrong 'un.
