Puncture, Cracked Alloy - Questions

Bit of a story with a couple of questions at the end...
I had a puncture on Sunday night. Put the space saver on and pootled home.
Rang around on Monday morning for a replacement tyre. Needed it fitted that day as had planned to do a fair amount of mileage on Monday afternoon and Tuesday. The only place that had one in my size (235/45 R19) anywhere vaguely locally was a place that rhymes with Click Flit. Also, the only brand they had was Pirelli. £290 later (yes - for ONE tyre), I was on my way.
An hour later, the tyre was flat again. I called Click Flit who sent a bloke out within a few hours (good of them). He took the wheel off and told me that actually, the alloy was cracked and there was no fault with the tyre. Picture of crack:
Initial questions are therefore:
Should Click Flit have checked the wheel and noticed the crack? Did they let the car go in an unfit state? Should they have informed me so I didn't needlessly spend £300 on a tyre?
I am therefore still on the space saver and have purchased a new wheel which arrived today:
This was another £300, so up to £600 now...
Is there any benefit in me contacting Ford about this? Car is a '62 Kuga on 11k miles.

Tyre was not punctured I don't think - air was escaping through the crack in the rim.
Did you ask for a new tyre or did you say "I think I've got a puncture, can you see whats wrong"? If you told them to fit a new tyre, I think you'll have to take it on the chin, if you asked them to find/fix the problem, you 'might' have some redress.As above drive in and say put a new tyre on this - what do you think they will do? Specially given they have a reputation for trying to up sell. Would you have believed them if they had told you the wheel was damaged?
Go in and say this tyre is flat can you fix it and you open them to the relm of looking for the fault as it may be a puncture they can plug or a faulty valve, all of which would mean that it was their decision to just go with the new tyre.
