Hi all, I'm interested in buying a second hand diesel golf and I've heard that the 1.9 engines are better than the later 2.0 GTD engines. Would be nice to know everyone's views in relation to performance, economy and reliability

The 2.0 was barely any more powerful, a little more refined but a little less economical. It is also more failure-prone.
Many people consider the sweet spot to be the PD direct injection engines which were fitted in certain models up until about 2006... The later common rail engines are more highly strung.

Is this for a project where you are prepared to invest time in creating a loom..... or are you under the impression there two are easily interchangeable?
