Lovely car - I deeply want one. Had a GT coupe in early '000's when you could get them for not a lot of cash and it was great, lovely engine note, great gearbox, quirky 'kickdown' on the throttle pedal - even if it wasn't a full fat UR.

It met a sad end when the bonnet catch hadn't engaged and the bonnet flew up whilst accelerating up Purley Way and my only option was to brake hard and aim for the kerb...

Misplaced pedantry I'm afraid.

The UR has quattro with a small q all over it, even in the heating element or the rear windscreen (very cool looking in the rearview mirror on a frosty day to see the word quattro defrost first!)

In that case it was peasantry!

I do remember the rear window but I don`t really remember it anywhere else, where did this capital Q thing start then?

Surely it was due to the fact that it was the entire name of the model rather than a description of say an Audi 90 that had 4 wheel drive?

To all those worried about parts - it is actually getting better (although not down to Audi)There is Audi Tradition who have 'some' obsolete parts, but you'd have to sell a Kidney to pay for them!

The only problem area recently to keep the car on the road has been Track Rod Ends and Ball Joints for certain models/year. This is getting resolved as I type and quattroparts.ch is coming up with more and more all the time, even a large portion of trim clips is now available.

Had mine for the last 14 years and love it! No plans to get rid of any time soon.

That's my understanding is that it turned into a capital Q when they apply Quattro four wheel drive to a base car. Six of one and half dozen of the other though, I describe mine with big Q little q and quite often with four letter words! :P

Other places on the car that has quattro written is on the rear side glass, the bonnet and on the passenger side of the dash (though I can't remember if that's standard or not!)

One of the all time greats.

I'd take one of these over any of its contemporaries.

Lovely Colour Lovely Car. Fab you Slag.

Back in 1990 due to work for a year I lived near Chester. Most evenings on the way home from work the last 4 miles of my journey were on a twisty back road where I usually hooked up with a red quattro.

Either he would be behind me or I behind him we had some great fun chasing each other.
I had a Alpine GTA V6 Turbo and on the dry days there was nothing between us, I could not loose him and he could not loose me. But on the wet days he most definitely had the upper hand.

He would turn off just 1/2 a mile before me and although we would always flash and wave we never actually met up but we had a good short work out at the end of most days which would put you in a good mood for the rest of the evening a great end to the day.

Always wanted one but never got round to one.
That made me feel all warm inside.

From Wikepedia, and we know that EVERYTHING from that site is absolutely accurate and true! :-)(just off to edit it now)

"The Audi Quattro was the first rally car to take advantage of the then-recently changed rules which allowed the use of four-wheel drive in competition racing. It won competition after competition for the next two years.[1] To commemorate the success of the original vehicle, all subsequent Audis with their trademark quattro four-wheel-drive system were badged "quattro" with a lower case "q" and in a distinct typeface which has remained nearly unchanged since its inception. The original car with the upper case "Q" in the Quattro name is a collector's piece."

I`d say that the Audi Quattro was adorned with quattro logos to promote the 4 wheel drive system that was also used on lesser models and that the small q logos weren`t model designations but feature "reminders"!

Very nice a modern classic worth owning that can be used,i remember taking one down a country lane felt rock solid but very nose heavy understeers would not have kept up with my 309gti over same road but liked the build quality and look of car.

Interesting you bring this up. I'm a Corrado owner, and whilst I appreciate the Corrado isn't quite the classic that the UR Quattro is, we're similarly exasperated by VW/Audi group's poor efforts at helping us keep our cars on the road.

Parts are steadily going obsolete, with some quite vital parts now unavailable. In recent years, VW have made a bit of an effort with their Classic Parts division in Wolfsburg - had the fortune to meet them and they seemed pretty enthusiastic in what they do, but I suspect VW will be tieing their hands somewhat in terms of what they can get reproduced, etc.

It's especially ridiculous as Audi love to trot out the Audi Quattro at any opportunity they get, yet evidently make life just as hard for the enthusiasts trying to keep them on the road by making parts virtually impossible to source. Why do you do this to people loyal to your brand?!

Why are VW/Audi so half arsed in their support for their older / classic cars? Other German marques like BMW and Mercedes do an excellent job of keeping their old cars on the road - though I admit I'm only going on word of mouth on this. Can any old BMW/Merc owners comment? Can you still get parts for 15-20 year old cars?

I ran a 14yo S124 E-Class and parts were no problem. Bear in mind that the W124 was launched in 1985 so the model line in general was nearly 25 years old when I sold mine and I believe that in the main few parts were troublesome to get hold of, AMGs and 4Matics excepted.

I owned and ran an MB for over 10 years....its was the MB that was featured in all the magazines when released (E22 KBD). I absolutely loved that car, but during a blip in my life...it went. I can still remember the day it pulled off the drive for the last time.

Now I drive a GTR (which is the car Audi should currently be making and calling quattro!) Don't get me wrong I also love Nissan GTR and understand the heritage....I have owned 3 R32's.

However, I still find myself looking weekly at the Quattro classified ads, recently a red 20v went for £16.5K if I did not have a few projects on the go I would have had that.

I will be a Quattro owner again...

A quick Google came up with scans of the Autocar road test and the obligatory inflation calculation says that the equivalent on-the-road price today would be a staggering £67,000!

I remember them being considered expensive at the time, but not that expensive. The article does mention that you could buy two Integrales for the price of the Quattro though...

And all for a car that would be out-dragged and out-cornered by a contemporary £25k hatchback... Scary, the march of progress!

Having owned an 84 Quattro I would fancy my chances against one now in my 2005 Clio 182 Cup!

I have a picture somewhere of a pricelist for the coupe GT (2wd) Coupe Quattro (4wd non turbo) and the Ur quattro. The last one was around four times the price of the CQ!

As for being out dragged, well that depends on whats under the bonnet wink I'm lucky enough to have one that's had the Dailynx treatment and a fully uprated hybrid turbo pushing out next to 300bhp which with 4wd and 1300kg kerbweight is no slouch!

Should be even better now mines had a full engine rebuild (following the crankshaft pulley bolt not being tightened enough and the engine eating itself!) and the turbo stripped down and fully serviced. Just got to get it all back together!!
