If you're of a similar age to me then I suspect that the Rothmans 956 is pretty much how the archetypal sportscar looks in your head.

Lovely, and a nice tribute.
Well said that man, I remember begging my old man to take me to Le Mans in the 80s to see these cars, he never did but once I started going in the 90s I haven't stopped (save for a brief sojourn when the kids were born - they now come every year too!). Roll on 2014!

In-Car 956 Porsche Experience. Definately worth buying. http://www.amazon.co.uk/In-Car-956-Porsche-Experie...
I got Derek Bell to autograph my copy a couple of years ago.

I could watch the old footage of this stuff all day long, amazing stuff!

Something about 270p that ads to the effect of the drama.

What a brilliant driver Stefan Bellof was. Perhaps too fearless for his own good, if he had ever been in a competitive F1 car we would have had history made for sure. Glad to see he is remembered.

Here is a link to the last WEC race on the Nordschleife in 1983.

Just look at the field a staggering array of talent including the reigning F1 champion Keke Rosberg, Lammers, Palmer, Patrese, Alboreto, Ghinzani, that's before we include the Joest & works Porsche line ups ..

Insanely quick driver and it cost him his life.

Prior to crashing at Pflanzgarten Bellof was leading but during Derek Bell's stint he paced himself and lost the lead to Jacky Ickx. When Bellof got back in he did another banzai stint, retook the lead from Jochen Mass (team mate to Ickx) and wanted to extend the lead even more and then car took off over the hump and into the armco. Mass feared the worst but Bellof was behind the armco and waved at him with a cheeky grin! Bell would later say that Bellof drove too hard.

At Spa Porsche wanted Ickx to win at his home race. Bell did the final stint as they never trusted Bellof.

At Brands he went off and damaged the car that resulted in a lengthy pit stop but recovered to finish on the podium with his banzai style.
