I object to calling it a plane. It's a flying bullet dispenser.
I've always like the noise they make when firing
BAM-BAM-BAM...parrrp...then the plane flies by

Some guy holding a round used by the A10
Build a tank with wings around this= A10

Didn't know that!
I suppose momentum is the key here. The actual force may be significant, and the velocity of the projectile very high, but compared to the mass and velocity of the aircraft, the momentum will be quite small.
A-10's are awesome beasts. I've heard them dubbed "the only gun to come with its own plane" before. I suppose momentum is the key here. The actual force may be significant, and the velocity of the projectile very high, but compared to the mass and velocity of the aircraft, the momentum will be quite small.
Iirc, the biggest issue with the GAU was that the gas produced during firing could flameout the engines, until they fitted ignitors which fired in unison with the gun.
Slightly off topic, but check out "Fire Strike 7/9" for some quality reading about using them for close air support. Everything about them is just crazy, from the gun being mounted off centre to compensate for the sheer force of it...to the rounds digging themselves 30 meters into the desert!
This puts the gun into perspective..

I believe the gun fires at 9 o'clock, so they had to offset the whole thing by half the diameter of the barrel assembly, so that the round leaves from the centreline of the aircraft, as opposed to being offset to one side. It'd yaw the aircraft otherwise, making it difficult to hit something more than once.
The gun's mounted at a 3 o'clock position in relation to the airframe (viewed head on) so each rev fires at 9 o'clock to counter for optimal balance, as you said, to prevent adverse yaw. Must have taken balls the size of watermelons to be the tester who pulled the trigger mid flight for the first time.

Also the back end for the A10 is amazing. I remember reading about one getting half its wing blown off and the engine eating about 90% of the debris. And still functioned perfectly after.
I heard that too but the only pictures I could find were theseleafspring said:
I don't think that engine still works though doogz said:
I like how they chose a gun that was really far too big for it. It didn't fit due to the front landing gear.
So they just moved the landing gear out the way to make space for the gun.
As far as i've read, the didn't choose the gun for the plane They chose the gun and the built a plane around it. that is probably the most epic thing about it.So they just moved the landing gear out the way to make space for the gun.

Slightly of topic.. But on te first page, there a small 2wd up hill off roader with almost bicycle like front wheels.
I've seen them many times and it looks like great fun.
Any ideas what their title is?
Or what class they run in?
Thanks
Tobe.
