F4 Phantom at St Athan
That always reminds me of this shot;

I'd imagine both pilots got a similar degree of bking from their superiors as well!
Showed the St Athan picture to a mate who used to work there, reckoned it was a regular occurence years ago and the pilots didn't get into trouble!

I'd guess probably not, all the Rolls Royce test facilities I know of are enclosed. Admittedly it was a few years ago I was working on them though.

Isn't it a J58 out of an SR-71 blackbird? Apparently the afterburner section would get so hot the metal would go translucent and you could see the outline of the internal structures :-0

ETA: sorry didn't see Doogz's reply above, spent too long looking at the pics without refreshing smile

One of our Mercedes sites has some photographer who does some gorgeous pictures. Enjoy...
The thread title says 'awesome'. Every single one of those images is dull and most have poor choice of exposure.
Odd one or two has a good composition. The rest look like photos from the classifieds. Go see:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

for some examples of good car shots (though some in there are also a bit duff!)

They have one of those in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn (near Detroit). It is absolutely monstrous. Largest, most powerful steam loco made. Designed to pull mile long coal cars up steep inclines and so hungry for coal they had to fit a mechanical cork-screw like system to funnel coal into the boilers because a group of men just wouldn't be able to shovel fast enough!
