My office has a view over Sydney harbour and there are always a hundred or so boats of varying types and sizes bobbing about, but you always notice when a sub is coming in. Very menacing shape in the water.

They have one of those in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn (near Detroit). It is absolutely monstrous. Largest, most powerful steam loco made. Designed to pull mile long coal cars up steep inclines and so hungry for coal they had to fit a mechanical cork-screw like system to funnel coal into the boilers because a group of men just wouldn't be able to shovel fast enough!
I think the photo is a 'BigBoy' (love the American's naming skill), and its an Allegheny in the H Ford Museum. Both can lay claim to being the biggest - depends on what your criteria is.

I should point out, I'm not a train enthusiast, but after seeing it at the museam, I had to look into it. its just HUGE!

Heres the Allegheny

From a website "At 40 MPH they could generate 7,500 HP"

I'd love to hear that from a BMW tech when you went to pick your car up from a service hehe
