Re: VW Golf R official
Discussion
I'm really struggling to see who would chose this over any of the other performance offerings in this price bracket, save for diehard Golf fans who absolutely won't be seen dead in anything else (you pay more but get more back when you sell - gotta love that justification!)
For me it'd be:
M135i - for the sound and steer - NOT for looks!
S3 - Performance but with a better looking package
S4 (£34k through brokers) - performance (same looks as S3!) but with a decent size boot!
AMG A45 - Not a fan of the look or price but can't deny the brutal speed!
Any number of second hand buys
VW Golf R!

A. Not sure about the styling of alloys and tailpipes as with everyone else, but the flagship Golf should look a bit more OTT than just a GTi maybe retro fit some different wheel and exhaust parts. I like the general Mk7 look though. B.Trying to work out where this leaves used Mk6 Golf R prices and desirability.
The looks are bitterly disappointing. The Mk6 R was quite handsome, this one just seems a bit out of proportion. The R badge on the front grille would look better floating in the black bit rather than sitting on the chrome floor. Four exhaust pipes is just too many.
I'll stick with my R32 for now then.

My thoughts exactly. Just looks stupid, like the TT-S.
Who needs four tail pipes.
It's necessary on a large capacity multi-cylinder engine. Having four on a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine though is going to attract ridicule... Who needs four tail pipes.
Who 'needs' more than 90bhp on a public road.........
I want.
Is it wrong to laugh at the people complaining about the 4 exhaust pipes and saying they'd prefer an S3 which has.....oooh, let's count them:
I prefer the Golf's looks and distinct lack of knobend image over the Audi or BMW. The last Golf R was also a significantly sharper and better steer than it's S3 sister as well. So let's wait for the road tests. £30k-ish and I'm interested as an Evo replacement. £35k and I'll laugh and walk away. No hot hatch is worth that.

A different wheel design with an 18" diameter would work better IMO, those just look a bit too big aesthetically, not to mention the potentially prohibited ride quality. As for those exhausts, too much maybe but the Germans sure do like to code their specs based on the number and shape of exhausts these days, particularly the performance-oriented models.
