Agree the Golf has always had an understated nature to it & probably doesn't need four exhausts, I am just impressed that finally after all these years they have actually produced a genuinely quick version at last...it's took them long enough.

Was just going to chip in - everyone's picked up on the exhausts, but noones mentioned the wheels, which look totally ridiculous. Between them make the car look very odd. Mk6 R was sort of cool because it was so understated, you'd have to be pretty close to spot one. This one, not so much.

^^ This. I'm also mildly surprised to hear that it will have cloth seats as standard. You're going to have to really want a Golf.

It looks like a base spec 1.4 car with a set of cheap halfords wheels.

Is this really worth the extra for 4wd over say a Megane Renaultsport thingy or Astra VXR?

I reckon the golf will be slower, weigh more and understeer more and cost say 5k more ? (real prices, not list).

If the new Leon is 4wd I'd be looking that way. I had a Mk1 Cupra R bought new for 16k where Golf GTi at the time was £20k+ and had less kit on board (climate control, big brakes, diff etc).

VW leather is awful, mrs envy has it in her golf only because it's easier to wipe baby sick up.

I'd have preferred the cloth option.

Well I'm interested and will certainly have a look when they hit the UK. I've had 2 golf's now (still have a Mk5 R32) and they were and are excellent. If it's around 30-35k that also seems pretty reasonable to me.

It's going to have to be less than £30k because the Audi S3 is £30,640... VW surely won't try to out-price the Audi will they?

It just looks bloated and crass, in particular those quad oval exhaust tips, which look like they were nicked off the back of a C63 AMG.

Not to sure why anyone would buy this car considering the better competition there is out there at the moment.

I think it looks ok, except the wheels (nice but not suited for a Golf R imo) and the 4 exhausts (4 are ok, but they could be a lot more subtle). Power hike is welcome, but compared to the M135i this will be the car to beat

The original R32s are the true VW "R" models with the growl of the V6 - (biased).

The 2.0 MK6 is nice, but lacking soul.

This MK7 to me, is just comical. Four pipes, really!

Stick the Audi 2.5 5cylinder in it from the TTRS, flare the arches and you can ask £35k for it! About time there was a proper 'HOT' golf rather than the subtle R32's we seem to get that generally appeal to the well heeled school run mum........

V's are out and fours with turbos in. Shame as that VR6 engine was just a wonderful engine. Interested to see it in the flesh.

The first 2.0l GTI was running (IIRC) only 115bhp. How times have changed.

Ick. Those rims are hideous and they're stealing BMW lamps now? I'm sure it will be fun to drive, but cmon' now.
