I've spent 20 years instilling in my wife that MLM's are idiots, but as she rarely drives on the motorway it rarely effects her.

But this week she had occasion to visit my midweek residence (I work away), and she reckons the reason people avoid using the inside lane on the M6 is most likely because it's almost impossible to keep the car in a straight line due to the 6 inch deep grooves that line up with the width of a lorry axle.

She's got a point.

In my old Astra I used to notice this really badly on parts of the A12. Usually was late at night so would just sit in the middle/outside unless something was coming, in which case I'd just move over to let it pass. *dons flamesuit* hehe

No need for a flame suit. It matters not which lane you are in if there is nothing behind.

I MLMed once, simply because the standing water from heavy rain in the grooves in the left lane was so bad my car literally got ejected out of them! eek

Runflats are actually the worst thing of all time for those grooves.

This whole recent middle-lane business is all about getting money out of the motorist.

As explained, there are good reasons why you could be driving in the middle lane but plod won't care about that. They'll just issue the fine as they will assume you're trying to make an excuse and won't accept it.

Impossible? really? Have you considered using the handwheel correctly? (and by correctly i don't mean steering with one wrist lightly balanced on the apex of the wheel....)

My car as 255/35/18 runflat tyres. I have no problem using the inside lane. (and i do so a lot ;-)

Only ever had an issue when towing our old car trailer. Big twin axle jobbie hated the ruts. These days I don't find the ruts as bad as they used to be.

Sorry but I do not agree, unless it is South from J8?

I regularly Drive J44 --> J8, and the reverse, with no real issues, and believe me, my tyres would tell me.

6 Inch deep grooves? Nah!

I was joking about the depth.

The only time I actually found it a problem was when it was minus 4 outside, and it had been raining in the night, and there was 2 tracks of ice.

But you do have to make more adjustment with the big round thing, than you would in the outside lane.

Her mini would appear to have runflats at the back but not at the front. 195/55/16 IIRC

She has with some roads. I've certainly been on a few where the inside lane is a constant skipping up and down ruts and it's not pleasant, especially in rain. I guess it depends on the width of your car as to how much you're affected by it but it's a valid point.

IMO a lot of MLMs not affected by the above do it because they think constantly changing lanes is bad, they mentally doze off and stay where they think they have the clearest run and they just don't see sitting in the middle lane as a problem.

This is horrendous in my Z4... Squirming side to side all the time.

Makes me want to do it, however I soldier on!

At least we now have the relevant law where they are ehhh... not allowed to do this...

Aye... Right you are!

Cynical? Me?

A lot of the motorways around the Midlands are pretty poor, the M6 actually has one of the better surfaces! The M1 south of about Rugby is awful for tramlining (much worse northbound for some reason?) and the M69 seemingly has no drainage...

Driven end to end of the M6 many times, living in Scotland and the inlaws being in SW Wales. Lane 1 is perfectly serviceable.

I do 35K a year and there are some sections of Mways (which change as they wear and get resurfaced) that make driving more difficult than it should be ....

I would add that 10 years ago some sections were truly undriveable, so there has been progress!

The pot holes in some stretches of the inside lane of the m5 mean I have to speed up from my rather gentle pace of 65 to 70 so I can go in the middle lane and not hold anyone up.

I only ever had to MLM once. I was driving from Winchester to Leeds in the middle of the night in winter a few years back. Car showed outside temp as -14... Was cruising in the inside lane when I just hit ice and everything went all light and started to move around a bit, I very quickly moved to the middle lane to avoid a slight case of death. :P
