Hello, the title says it all; where did you get your driving lessons? I'm currently paying? £27.50 for my lessons with the AA.

Lessons taken almost 2 decades ago in another country on a faraway continent. Using several different models of Opel, over maybe 3 lessons. I can't remember what I paid.

Probably not that useful to you, but thanks for the trip down memory loss lane.

Local well recommended instructor who worked for himself rather than a driving school - £20/hour in 2008.

Mine was £20p/h with a well regarded instructor in 2012. I started my lessons six months after I turned seventeen.

Afterall, this is PH so what car did you learn in? I learnt in a Renault Megane 1.5d but did my PassPlus course in an new Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

No such luxury here - 1.4 Corsa and a rather fked 1.3 CDTI one (courtesy car) when one of his other pupils had a bump in it!

The Austin and Austin-Healey dealers in Scarborough had a driving school. I started out with them in the summer of 1957, with lessons at 16s 6d per hour, 82.5 pence in current terms. tongue out

I'm now getting most of my lessons from ADUK. wink

I'm currently being taught in a 1.0 Ford Fiesta Titanium; nothing special about it. During one of my lessons I found out that the AA buy their cars and resell them after it gains around 20k miles.

I booked my first driving lesson on my 17th birthday. All ready for it, nobody turned up at the appointed time. Quite upset.

A week later the car turned up at the rearranged time, on time. An obese, sweat stained, hairy moled woman at the wheel of an Issigonis Mini appears with L plates. Man alive there was barely room for her in there, but somehow I squeezed in. I seem to have blanked out the actual experience of driving probably through sheer terror.

I subsequently arranged lessons with a nice bloke through BSM, and on the second test he suggested paying him cash at a discount. He was later sacked for this.

Beverly, 2002, Royal logistic corp training ground.

I was ready for my test after 2 days but the civi instructor and myself came to an understanding, we would drive for 1 hour then we would back to his house so that he could watch the cricket world cup or some such nonsense, and he had to buy me lunch. I was the only pupil who regularly came back from driving half cut.

The most relaxed seven days of my life.

Ps, my god there were some good looking women in Beverly yet it shared a water supply with Hull. I never understood that one.

I paid £15 a hour in 2006/2007, independent person via word of mouth, sister also used him when she learnt last year. Think she paid £18 a hour then.

We both learnt in a Ford KA frown.

Ask your instructor to book directly with him rather than through the aa. Should save you a few quid per hour.

I talked to him about the price; he then told me to ring them and haggle with them until I get a good price. The only two wakes I can book lessons are either from ringing them or booking online.

I did 7 lessons including my test back in the early 90's. Passed first time and gave my instructor a carton of 200 B&H which he smoked throughout our lessons after checking I didn't mind. smile

Took me two years off on and off learning and in that time I drove an early Suzuki swift with a 1 litre engine and and the worst clutch I've ever felt. It had no fixed biting point and felt just plain rubbish. Then onto a corsa which wasn't all that much better, then onto a diesel c3 and then finally passed in a swift sport in 2012. I was a very poor driver and passed on my fourth attempt. smile

Richard

I think I payed no more than £18 per hour and about £145 for 10 hours with one instructor.

I think I paid about £12:50 an hour, which admittedly wasn't yesterday. Chap was a local independent who had been recommended to me, ex police senior instructor and ex area examiner. Didn't just teach me to pass the test, but to drive too. Two things which are definitely not the same thing. I passed first time anyway, heaven knows how because I was sliiightly stressed that day.

Recently I am seeing a lot more "premium" learner cars. MINI, Audi A3, BMW 1-series etc. Looks like there is money to be made from brand snob teenagers and their parents. Who knew!
