I remember when TopGun came out, despite the flying and aspects being a bit Hollywood I knew of few fast-jet pilots who didn't love it for what it was...most military folks still do as it shows a side to squadron life, training and ops most don't see or ever understand (psych wise). Did a lot for recruitment too at the time.

At the end of the film people will realise that it is Niki Lauda who is the true hero of 1976, however his friendship with James Hunt was far more personal and is not portrayed so well in the film as Hollywood needs them to be more pointedly rivals whereas they were true friends, I believe that Niki gave James some money when he was down on his luck in later years, and their friendship lasted until the end of James's life.
The part that needs telling is how backbiting and political the Ferrari set up was at the time and Enzo was mortified when Niki retired in Japan and was forever complaining about how much he had to pay Niki to drive in 76 as the reigning champion Niki put his fee up and Enzo called him a jewboy! Finally it is interesting how the team descended into chaos when Luca di Montezemelo and Niki left, Jody Scheckter inherited the seat and the T4 was champion then Ferrari were nowhere until Michael Schumacher repeated the Niki treatment-Testing testing testing.
The saddest thing of the era was the continuing deaths of drivers and all lost were talented potential champions.

4 or 5 reviews out on the net already which are saying that after a slow start this film is really very good. One of them is even suggesting an Oscar nomination for the chap who plays Lauda!yikes

I'll be there and I'm willing to bet the DVD/Blu-ray will have some pretty good features too.

Funny, I noticed only the other evening that the tyre marks and the paint markings for the pit-lane are still visible on the tarmac at Blackbushe where some of it was filmed.

I was the still photographer on Rush and can assure you there was no cgi involved in this image;

As soon as I saw it I knew it would be a keeper!

Ive one of those aswell.... Whats your problem!!! :-)

Ah thats always the way, especially when the actor doesnt actually come from the same country as the person they are trying to portray.

I went to the premiere/ after party last night in Leics Sq/One Marylebone. An amazing event - Niki said that he enjoyed it and stood up to take the applause at the end. Jenson said (at the bar afterwards) that he thinks they did a good job with the racing scenes...

It is good and works on multiple levels. I won't say anymore as people can go and make their own minds up (or not go and feel smugly superior in their own little world - there is no pleasing all the people all the time...), but I have no hesitation in recommending it to petrolheads or civilians alike.

It's not an anorak's documentary, it's faction and a film of a great story of two great rivals. The Niki character and actor are very good indeed and I can see why he has been mentioned as an Oscar possibility.

Deserves to be seen on the big screen with a good sound system, and, no, "James" doesn't have an Irish accent rolleyes

No commercial connection - I just enjoyed it

Definitely not an Irish accent (and I'm Irish...) - pretty close to James's languid home counties drawl

An amazing and truly terrible time in motor racing. The Hunt/ Lauda period was awesome but there are so many other stories from that era that are worth telling too. David Purley surviving the highest G load in human history when he hit the wall in 77 is still amazing as was his attempt to save Roger Williamson in 1973 which is still the most harrowing bit of film I've ever seen.

Looking forward to seeing Rush and I'll take the Hollywood element of it, there is little enough in the way of good movies being made these days!

I think the 30s grand prix scene would also be great:nazi politics, awesome cars, germanic levels of snobbery (you won, but i will drink champagne, you will have beer) etc and in the middle, a wiry italian genius and an aristocratic brit who marries the daughter of the bmw boss. An amazing story

I'm just relieved they didn't remove the cigarette advertising.

End of the day it's a Ron Howard film so it will mix honesty and detail with too-much-sugar - because everything he's done has done that.
