People suck at picking-out accents

I'm from North East England but having worked abroad (where people had to be able to understand what I said) my accent isn't quite as pronounced as it could be - which eventually led to me being mistaken for an Irishman when I asked for directions to a military base - which led to guns being waved and other 'excitement'.

Went to a pre-release showing tonight - they've nailed it, in good detail, cinematography and simply as an entertaining film to watch.

Recommended.

Went to a preview about a month ago - my sentiments entirely!

Even the wife enjoyed it!

Thoroughly agree - most of the audience at my showing tonight weren't around when Hunt/Lauda were driving, but they were enthralled. Ron Howard's done a good job balancing Hollywood with the dangers of 1970s F1. Both Hunt and Lauda come off well, and Daniel Bruhl, playing Lauda, is excellent

Daniel Bruhl is fortunate in one respect, that Niki embraced the project early on and spent considerable time with Daniel. It's such a shame that James is not alive to see it-As Niki said at the premiere it would have been his best day if James was there with him. Niki was also a great friend of Ronnie Peterson who died at Monza in 78 through a very tragic set of circumstances in his Lotus, he too is greatly missed. What dangerous times they were and when you see how dainty the cars were it's not hard to imagine the aluminium and glass fibre coffins they often became. Hopefully Sky/BBC can show some of the periods races on F1 weekends for us to again appreciate the beauty of the cars and how individually different the teams and cars were.

saw it last night and loved it. You don't often see genuinely exciting AND realistic films. I'm extremely critical of the things i come across in the world, but i have to say i have nothing bad to say about the film. Very non-hollywood, very loud without being the typical action horrible CGI toss you see these days. The whole thing takes place just before i was born so can't comment on the accuracy of the 70s-ness etc, but it seemed bob on to me. It isn't even just for petrolheads, my missus absolutely loved it too.

At the end of the film people will realise that it is Niki Lauda who is the true hero of 1976, however his friendship with James Hunt was far more personal and is not portrayed so well in the film as Hollywood needs them to be more pointedly rivals whereas they were true friends, I believe that Niki gave James some money when he was down on his luck in later years, and their friendship lasted until the end of James's life.
The part that needs telling is how backbiting and political the Ferrari set up was at the time and Enzo was mortified when Niki retired in Japan and was forever complaining about how much he had to pay Niki to drive in 76 as the reigning champion Niki put his fee up and Enzo called him a jewboy! Finally it is interesting how the team descended into chaos when Luca di Montezemelo and Niki left, Jody Scheckter inherited the seat and the T4 was champion then Ferrari were nowhere until Michael Schumacher repeated the Niki treatment-Testing testing testing.
The saddest thing of the era was the continuing deaths of drivers and all lost were talented potential champions.
Not quite, Prost was one collision away from taking the championship for Ferrari in 1990, against very strong competition (no-one other than Senna in that Mclaren would have denied Prost that year...) smile

(Actually it was Berger, another Austrian, who started the Ferrari resurgence in '92 making sure key people were hired as that years car was so bad; that then formed the foundations for the later successes - parenthetically, in '95 Ferrari would have won 3 races but for some random issues /same level of competitiveness that Schumacher achieved the following year...)

Good film, bit gory, probably the best racing film as Grand Prix was so long/boring - in a historical context, will prob. help to elevate Lauda's achievements /shame it couldn't have been a little bit more accurate as you say.

Saw this last night and it's superb - worth the wait and justifies the hype. Whether it will be hugely successful compared to some films I don't know - the cinema was only half full last night which surprised me considering it was only the 2nd night out!

I rarely buy films on DVD after watching them in the cinema, but I definitely will be with this one!

my local cinema was nowhere near half full on opening night. Quite often there is only a handful of people in any given screening and never any chavs or kids. I love it there! I also get 2 free cinema passes every week through my health insurance. Not rubbing it in like smile
