I'd call all of them heavy. hehe

The full four-seaters have an excuse of sorts, though.

What direction will this thread go?

I predict the OP will be both the victim of and the maker of a personal insult before the end of this page, it'll turn into a st-slinging exercise where he proves he's a bigger petrol head than everyone else, there'll be references to Smart Roadsters and TVRs, ill-informed guff about Yank cars followed by blind and bitter defence of them. Possibly mpg claims about "my Camaro" and why hatchbacks are crap.

Even the all-aluminium and therefore lightweight NSX is ... er ... 1350-1420kg!

You forgot the bit where someone disputes the weights and then we start going into source of the weights quoted and whether they include a passenger, luggage, fuel, dog, etc wink

What weight do you think it should be, then? And what would you design differently so it weighs what you think it should?

I would suggest these thoughts come from certain cars feeling heavier than others instead of the actual weight.

The weights need to be shown to be on a comparable basis before this thread can be worthwhile.

I saw the thread title and instantly I KNEW who was responsible.
I dare say the column next to the thread title called 'Author' was a bit of a give away too hehe

Is an aircooled 993 really heavier than a water cooled 996?

scratchchin

Carrera 4 vs Carrera 2 might be - figures I found online say about 1370kg for both in Carrera 2 form.

It's interesting that a F430 is heavier than a Dodge Viper - not something you'd expect!

1230 for the early NSX-R (or 1270 for the later one), that one is pretty light.

Lightweight versions of many things have more impressive weights though, like sub-1200kg for the lightest Imprezas and Evos, 1295 for a 993 GT2.

I think you make a good point, its a bit like the build quality, a lot base things on perception and not actual facts.

I had a Volvo 850 T5 and a guy at work kept going on about how heavy Volvos were, 1420 kilos, not excessive for a decent sized 5 cylinder car, no heavier than anything comparable, his perception was based on a decades old impression of Volvos, Vovlos did used to be of heavier construction than say a Cortina but there probably wasnt that much in it, even back then.

A lot seem to think cabriolets are lighter as well, certainly not true of those based on a closed car, same with estates, the assumption seems to be an estate is half as heavy again, in reality its a few kilos.

Modern cars are heavy, of that there is no doubt but I think they are going the other way now via clever design, I think the zenith was diesel Audi A4 Cabrios weighing over two tonnes and a specced up Discovery/RR Sport getting on for three tonnes.

My mother in law holds the view that BMWs have very expensive tyres. This is obviously from a time when they had metric tyres and so not at all relevant now.

It takes a very long time for a brand to lose a reputation, be it good or bad. Look at the number of people who still believe in "German reliability" despite most German cars constantly well behind most Japanese ones in reliability statistics these days.
